I am from Omagh and I could tell you about the Doherty surname in Londonderry/Derry. There is a Protestant Doherty family and a Catholic Doherty family - surname spelt the same - it's how they pronounce it - Dougherty for the Protestants and Dawherty for the Catholics. So it is inaccurate to say the shortened form of Doughherty is Doherty and was used as time went on.
