James O'Maley (birth date guess of 1800) married Bettie Buckley (birth date guess 1810) before 1832 in Ireland. They both died in Ireland.

Their 2 sons emigrated to Kentucky in the 1860s (possibly 1860, 1868, or 1864).  Patrick O'Maley was born March 01, 1832 in County Mayo and died in Kentucky. He married Mary unknown in 1855. She died in Kentucky and he then married an unknown Costello.

The other son was James O'Maley. He was born 1845 in County Mayo and died Feb 20, 2920 in Kentucky. He married Ellen Buckley before 1876. She was born July 4, 1855 and died April 14th, 1936 in Maysville, KY.

I am looking for any Irish records that validate this data.  I don't know what part of County Mayo they were from.

Thanks

Dale Maley

  • Hi Dale,

Thank you for your message. Unfortunately it may be difficult to find these records (if they exist) with knowing what parish in Co. Mayo the family came from.

Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names in Mayo at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc.

There are some places where you can search online, however these websites do not have complete records.:

www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.

You could also try searching at http://www.mayoancestors.com/default.aspx however you need to register to be able to see the full results.

You could also check for record of the family in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century.  These do not give any genealogical information however they can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Also note that the surname may be recorded as O?Malley.

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    Irish Times: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/index.htm

    Irish Genealogy Tool kit: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/

    The US National Archives: http://www.archives.gov/

    Mayo: www.mayo.ie

    Genealogy Links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/mayo/index.html

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,

  • Did some more work on the family tree today.

I was able to verify James Maley or O'Maley was married to Bettie Buckley, and they stayed in Ireland.  The verification came from the death certificate for their son, James Maley, (1845-1920) who emigrated to Maysville, Kentucky, in Mason County.   James Maley (1845-1920) married Ellen Buckley (1855-1936).  Her parents were born in Ireland and were Timothy Buckley (1803-1880) and Ellen Callahan (1830-1880).  Timothy and Ellen migrated to Maysville, KY.

Another son was Patrick O'Maley (1832-1913), he also emigrated to Maysville, KY.

I have 1 hint the Maley's were from County Mayo, but that could be incorrect.

  • Dear Kenny_OMalley:

Thank you for your post.  Have you checked the Aughaval graveyard for any headstones for this family?

I will ask a local volunteer about where the graveyard inscriptions may be located online or in a historical journal.

He will reply to you on this thread.

    All the best,

    Jane
