I am currently researching my gr gr grandfather John McKeon, born December 1838 in Youghalara.  The date and place are what I have from my Aunt who's been researching for years, however, I would love to get some confirmation.  John may/may not have had the middle initial J and I have seen alternate spelling of McKeon as McKeone.

Any suggested links for baptism or how to confirm I'm on the right path is greatly appreciated.  Also, if anyone knows whether McKeon is linked/similar to McKeone I'd love to know.

John McKeon left Ireland prior to 1861 where he is on the Chilton, England census and married my gr gr grandmother, Lucy Ann Whitfield, 29 January 1864 in Durham.  They settled there and had several children of which my gr grandmother Margaret McKeon is a decendant.

I also have, what might be a red herring, that he was christened in County Cavan.

Any other people looking for McKeon?

Thank you for your help.

  • Hi Alexandra

The only baptism records on www.rootsireland.ie/ for John McKeon 1838 are both Cavan; there are none in Tipperary

    There is a John McKeon 1837 & a John McKeone 1838

  • Hi Col,

Thanks so much for the information!  Any thoughts on the "E" at the end of the name (or lack of it)?  For instance, my last name has 2 completely different pronounciations depending on which side of the family tree you're going down.  Does the "E" have anything to do with something like that?

Also wondering if the parents are listed in either of those baptism records.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Alexandra,

You need to purchase credit to view the full records on rootsireland; they SHOULD have the parents' names (but some don't); they all have the parish.

I'm not sure about the E question

There were a lot of inaccuracies in spelling of names due to illiteracy and errors in transcription. There also was an evolution in name spelling such as when someone decided to drop the E

To test the evolutionary theory I looked at the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (free to search); there are 5 McKeons and 23 McKeons in Cavan

In Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 (also free) there are 0 McKeones and 70 McKeons in Cavan which seems to suggest the E was dropped permanently by all.
