Parents of Michael Burke

 I found this baptismal index record on www.familysearch.org I was looking for Burke children born to John Burke and Margaret McNicholas 1864-1880 and this was the only record I found which I assume is your great-grandfather. I also looked at the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Annagh civil parish. There are 3-4 John Burke's listed. ( see link below). Finally, at the bottom of my message is the civil birth index record for Michael's birth. If you are interested in getting a copy of the birth record from the GRO, let me know and I will explain the process.

I just checked www.rootsireland.ie and they have baptismal records for Annagh parish from 1851-1900 and marriage records from 1852-1900. Roots is a pay site but you may want to join and look for other family baptism records. Roots is having a 40% off sale currently thru 12/4.

Roger...WOW thanks for the information. Am I to assume that Annagh parish is a place to focus on? It is one of the things that is confusing. I know from the birth record that Ballyhaunis is listed as district/parish and it says address as Rooskey Knock but understanding parishes vs towns is difficult. Where are you located? I am interested in how to get the record from the GRO. I also found a John Burke  in griffiths valuation under county of Mayo, Barony of Kilmaine, Union of Ballinrobe, Parish of Ballinchalla. Seems I need to tie my John Burke to his marriage with Margaret (Peggy McNicholas) then I will know I have the right one. What do you think. I am already a member of roots ireland.

The town of Ballyhaunis is actually situated in two civil parishes (Bekan and Annagh). Most of the town is in Annagh.

I'm confused by the reference to Rooskey and Knock. I assume this is on the Ancestry record?

For the GRO, go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx  Hit the link that is for birth certificates in English. A screen will come up asking for a User Name and Password. Hit cancel. The form should come up. Fill out the form and provide the year of birth, registration district (Claremorris) and the volume and page number ( 14 and 179). This information will allow the GRO to go right to the record. Make sure you ask for a copy only which should cost around 4 euros. I always use my credit card and have had no problems. You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you. The record will show the parents names and where they lived.

Yes the reference to Rooskey Knock is from a record on roots ireland, a civil birth record for Michael Burke to John Burke and Peggy McNicholas Burke, has address as Rooskey Knock, has Parish/District as Ballyhaunis District, and county as Mayo.

I am pretty sure my husband's Burke family and yours are related! We actually went to Ballyhaunis in April 1973 and went out to the family farm, but have since lost contact! I only have the line back to:

Birth 1836 in Brickeens, Co Mayo, or Co Galway, IRL

Death 1883 in Ballyhaunis, Mayo, Ireland

When I began the research on this family my mother-in-law, Gertrude Catherine Donlon Murphy was still alive, so she gave me names & places. The children are the ones she knew of: Thomas Burke was md to Catherine Murphy 1857, 14 Dec— Age: 21

Catherine Murphy was the d/o Austin Murphy & Catherine Roche, their children as I was told back in the 1960's'. Her mother was Anna "Annie" Burke who md Mike Donlon.

Just checking the Burke details.

I hope relative to the communications that you have found the relative Burke details requested. I can understand the confusion relative to Civic/town districts versus Parish areas.

As alluded in previous communications on this page, the Ballyhaunis town and district was in two parish areas of Bekan and Annagh. This changed in 1893 where the parish boundaries were altered. All areas within 2-3 miles of Ballyhaunis town and areas north east and east of the town were part of the new Annagh parish. The Bekan parish was made up of areas primarily to the the west and south of Ballyhaunis town. In this scenario, I would advise that you check both parish areas if checking family records on www.rootsireland.ie. The civil record area would still be the same. (Some other boundary changes were made where specific villages from surrounding parishes were swapped/interchanged. The other relevant parishes noting these changes were primarily relevant to Aghamore and Kiltullagh(Ballinlough/Cloonfad) in the district. Just keep an open mind when checking these records.    

Records from the Knock Parish area in times past were duly recorded in the Ballyhaunis Civil area and also in Claremorris which you may note on www.rootsireland.ie also. In relation to the Micheal Burke outlined at the start, this is the only record noting the same parentage from my research. There may have been more siblings especially noting that Civil records started in the same period of Michael's birth and also noting that Parish records are less reliable.
