Fleming

Hi Greg,

There are 44 Flemings in Galway in the Tithe Applotments (freely available online) 1824-34 but no Elizabeths.

I had a look on www.rootsireland.ie/ 

There was no marriage of Elizabeth ? to ? Fleming 1820 + - 8 years in Galway but there were 7 in other counties: 3 in Cork, 2 in Kilkenny, 1 in Down & 1 in Derry.

The use of the term single parent rather than widow however makes it questionable whether she was ever married. The only Elizabeth Fleming born 1807 + - 1 year was an Elizabeth Femmin in Meath 1808.

I searched for the children's births in Galway and got Ann in 1828 parish Tuam RC; Michael 1830 parish Abbeyknockmoy; no Richards and 4 Johns but none in Abbeyknockmoy or Tuam. However, when I added Elizabeth as mother's first name I got no results! 

I tried searching all counties for the children with mother Elizabeth with their birth years but the only match was John 1838 in Antrim.

 There are 111 Flemings in the Griffiths Valuation in Galway in 1855, 348 in the 1901 census and 398 in the 1911 (all free to search).

There are 44 in the Irish phone book in Galway - so maybe if you write a letter and send it off one of them might know something as I haven't been able to find anything for you Greg.

Thank you so much Col for the research that you have done; it gives me a good start no doubt.  A shock for the family if you are right about the term single parent - very staunch Catholic family- at least since my grandparents time.  Oh well.   When in Adelaide in about 1989 I went to the Catholic Archives office and found something that indicated that Elizabeth Fleming may have actually been Eliza Fleming but can't find anything about that now.  But I have just found an Elizabeth Flemming who died in Adelaide in 1861 so I will check that out as a first step to try and find out more.
