Looking for Bohola Parish, Ballinlag Township Relatives

If you look closely at the 1911 census record, you can see that Anne initially wrote Campbell and then McNicholas was written on top.

I looked for a civil index record for the marriage with no success. I also checked www.rootsireland.ie which is a pay site to view a record. There is a James McNicholas/Anne Campbell marriage on ttheir data base for 1901. You may want to register and get the record.

I listed out the 1856 Griffiths valuation head of household listing for Bohola civil parish. As you probably know, that area is McNicholas territory. In any event, there were a couple of McNicholas records for Ballinlag.

Thanks so much for replying. I did see that their was writing under Anne's name but I couldn't make it out as well as you did. I appreciate your looking for me and I checked out your links. I'm a little unsure of how the one site  charges as it seems you could rack up a hefty bill easily. I may recheck on some pay sites where I am a current member thanks to your verification of the Campbell name. 

I did find the name on the Griffiths Valuation record, but I can't seem to find where the modern day place of Ballinlag Townsland is located. Any suggestions on where to see a map online that has both modern and old maps?

Hopefully, you have Google Maps. Ballinlag is included. It is southeast of Bohola off of the N5 national road.

Roger thanks so much for your help and patience with me. I am quite new to genealogy and learning as I go.

I finally found it. It took several tries because it just kept giving me names of places close to the same name or telling me it didn't understand the location  (I had typed in: Ballinlag Township, Ireland, when I got that message) Finally after mixing different combinations of places I found it. If you had not written it was there, I would not have persisted. Final winner: Ballinlag, Bohola, Mayo, Ireland. I am not familiar with the address format used in Ireland and didn't know what needed to be included for Google to find the proper place.

I will now be searching to see if I can find an online phone directory for the area to see if there are any McNicholas still there. I can only see about five houses on the area marked Ballinlag, but the census lists about 25 families then. I am not sure if my relatives actually owned the farm or if they were tenant farmers. If they didn't own the land it is highly possible when families started getting smaller and many were immigrating to the US, there was not enough family members to keep the farm going.

Any suggestions on what is the biggest town in the area where we might find records on that area that we can’t find on line? I see Swinford, Castlebar, and Kiltamagh, as the closest places. Castlebar looks the biggest but sometimes the big places don’t have a lot of records for the tiny places and you need to go more local.

Everyone was listed as Catholic on the census so is there anyone from the area that would know where the closest Catholic Church or graveyard is? I’m guessing that is where I would find the records for births, marriage, and also the graves. If there isn’t one in the area or it was destroyed, any idea of where the records for those kinds of things might be. My aunt hopes to go this spring and could look for things that I can't access online.

I have not been online much the last few days because we have a new granddaughter. A few quick comments.

I just entered Ballinlag into Google Maps and it came up.

The link for the Irish phone book is below but it is generally useless since very few folks are included. Like the USA, very few folks have land line numbers published in a phone book.

Your replies are more than fast enough for me and I appreciate your work in looking up and sending links for me.

It must be Google knows where we are looking from because I tried again today, just typing in Ballinlag. Closest I could get was still Ballina. Go figure.

I will be looking into the links today and also studying the census data for both 1901 and 1911. See if I can determine brother sister relations. It might possibly help if I can find other family that I can find info on. I seem to be at a dead end right now. I did hear of distant relative who has some info. So right now I’m trying to make contact through several relatives passing on my email. Just waiting to hear back.

This is a really late response to this thread, but I thought I would chime in in case anyone is still following it.  I have McNicholas relatives from Bohola, and from just across the parish border in Killedan (towards Kiltimagh).  In case you're interested in checking for a connection, I have my DNA posted at GEDMATCH (kit number T780556), and several of my second cousins from the area have their DNA posted as well, and the mother of one of these cousins had Campbell as her maiden name.
