Hi

I am trying to trace my Uncle Simon O Flaherty roots

I believe he was born on Island of Inis Meain and had one sister I also think that both his parents were killed in an accident and that both children were orphans and sent to some other part of Ireland to be raised by family or friends

He joined the Royal Inisskilling Fus in 1899 and went to war, on returning from battle he seemly came into some considerable money which he invested in Stocks in US however he lost it all in 1929 Wall street crash

He married my paternal Aunt Margaret O'Loughlin and they purchased and ran a grocery shop in Ennistymon Co Clare called O'Flahertys until he passed away on 07/07/1967

Thank you so much

I am not sure what year he was born but  he joined the arm in 1899   (maybe 1880/1/2/3/4/5 ??)

  • Hello Margaret,

If you go to www.rootsireland.ie , you will find the baptismal record for Simon O Flaherty in the Aran Islands  RC in 1881.   It's free to join this site and search it, but you will have to pay about €5 to view the record.  Hopefully it will yield much information for you.

  • Margaret,

I forgot to say that when you know the names of his parents, you may be able to search newspaper records for information on that trajic accident.  It may tell to whom the children were sent after their parents' deaths.

Look also at the 1901 and 1911 census for Simon.  Have you any idea what was the name of his sister?

  • Hi Anne

No I have no more information on Parents names or his sisters name - as he was at war from 1899 he is not on 1901 census. I am going to RDS tomorrow for Back to past show so hopefully I will get some more leads there.

Thank you so much for your help so far and no doubt I will probably be back on to you if I get some more information

    :)

    Hello Margaret,

Thank you for giving me the names of Simon's parents.  It's a pity that his mother' maiden name is not given asw in most records.  However I put in the information that I had  child born to Bartholomew O Flaherty (doesn't matter if there is an o or not)  with mother Catherine.   I got back about 8 records in the date range.  Who new that the name Bartholomew would be prevalent in Galway???   I narrowed down toh search to the Aran Islands and came up with just two records.  Simon's record (which you have) and a record for Bridget O Flaherty born in 1884.

At least now you have both sibling names and hopefully you may be able to search newspapers to see if there is anything about an accident.

I went to the census to see if I could find a Bridget O Flaherty or Flaherty.  Both are distinct on the census but not often on church records.

She would have been aged between 16 and 18 years, depending on when her birthday fell and when the census was taken.   I found a record for a servant girl Bridget Flaherty living with a Mc Hale family in Aillebrack, Co. Galway.  Don't know if she is your Bridget or not.

It may be worth contacting the local newspaper in the Aran Island to see if they have copies of old articles and where they would be kept now.

Anyway that's all I have for now,

    Kind regards,

    Anne

  • Hi Margaret,

I forgot to say that when you open  Bridgets record it might give the maiden name of her mother (fingers crossed) .  You might let me know what it says and we'll see if there is anything more we can do for you,

    Regards,

    Anne

    Hi Margaret,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie and searched the marriage record with both names you gave.  It seems that there are two records for their marriage in 1874.  One record is a church record and the other is a civil record.

I did a full search for all offspring and still only found the two children.

I think you may need to follow up newspapers to see what happened the parents.

Sorry I can't be of anymore use.

    Kind regards,

    Anne
