My husband's great grandfather was William Kelley. I had thought he was from County Mayo but have been told by a local historian from Vermont that the Kelleys were from Kilkenny. On his death certificate it said his mother was Mary Kichan and his father was Thomas Kelley. His birth year was listed as 1840. I have searched the Ireland records and have been unable to find him. Has anyone heard the name Kichan or was it spelled wrong on the death certificate? Thanks!

Hi Dana,
There is a record of the baptism/birth of William Kelley in 1838 in Kilkenny on www.rootsireland.ie/ Parents are Thomas and Mary. When I added Kichan for mother's surname in the search criteria nothing came up.
roots is a pay site so the record will cost bjut it will give you her surname and the parish they came from.
I couldn't find a marriage record for Thomas & mary
The only Kichan in the Tithe Applotments (1823-37) is Phillip Kichan in Waterford.
There are no Kichans in Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 or on the 1901 & 1911 Censuses of Ireland.
