Five siblings of a County Mayo MULROY family immigrated to America during the mid-1800’s: John L & wife (Mary JENNINGS) in 1847; Michael (never married) prior 1850; Nancy & husband (James JENNINGS) about 1833; Mary & husband (John FOY) prior 1851; and, Richard in 1847.  In his writings, Richard stated that he was born at or near Ashbrook, which is in Straide Parish.  The preponderance of Mulroy and Foy names in that area would support that members of this family lived there, at least until 1850; while it is likely that the two Jennings (also, possibly siblings) who married Mulroy siblings were from the neighboring parish of Turlough.  According to family records, father Mulroy (possibly also named Richard) died in County Mayo in 1848 and mother Mulroy (possibly Mary or Cecilia) in 1845.  Family correspondence indicates a continued dialogue between the five siblings (who eventually settled in Wisconsin, Kansas and The Dakotas) and family members still in County Mayo as late as 1910.  Searches of the Straide gravesites, available parish records, and land / tax records have not resulted in any specific correlation(s) between this Mulroy family and those who continued to reside in the area after 1850.  It would seem likely that this Irish family consisted of more than just the five siblings who emigrated, and almost certain that ancestors of present day Templemore Mulroys were those siblings or, at least, cousins.  Any assistance in connecting the dots to this MULROY family and identifying their parents and extended family would be most appreciated.

Can't tell if you have checked the Tithe Applotment records for Templemore parish. www.titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie   There were 3 Mulroys listed in the 1833 Tithe records for the parish ( Martin, Thomas and Owen). The spelling of the townlands and names are frequently wrong.

I also looked at the 1856 Griffiths valuation head of household listing for Templemore and there were a number (12) of Mulroys listed. Not sure how they relate to your five siblings.

Finally, you may want to consider taking a DNA test. http://www.mulroys.org/

  • Roger  --  Thank you very much for your quick response.

I have, unfortunately, been unable to make any concrete correlations between the Mulroys named in either the Tithe records or Griffiths Valuation.  Although Richard Mulroy’s marriage record indicates that his father’s name was also Richard, I place a diminishing probability on that having been the case; because of … (1) the notable absence of any Richard Mulroy in County Mayo prior to his purported death in 1848; and (2) the marriage record was entered several days/weeks following the ceremony by a circuit priest upon returning to his quite distant home church.

I can, presumably, rule out some of the tax/land record names by looking at the given names in this line of the Mulroy family. The first names Martin and Owen were not given to any of the eleven male offspring of the five known Mulroy siblings I am researching; the name Thomas was given once, to Nancy’s second-born son … so, could be a possibility for a maternal grandfather (Nancy’s father).

Of the six different male first names for the twelve Templemore Mulroy listings in the 1855 Griffiths: I again set aside Martin and James because of not appearing in the later generations; John appears twice (once given to a first born son of a son); Michael appears once; Patrick appears twice; and Thomas, again, but only once.  So, going by naming tradition (and skipping a generation), I would really just be throwing darts … with John and Thomas edging out.

Now, recalling that since the parents purportedly died in 1848(f) and 1845(m) any correlation between names in the 1855 valuation would be of additional siblings or cousins of the five known siblings who emigrated to the U.S. from, we believe, Templemore.  Of the twelve entries for Templemore, only four are in Straide: Michael, Martin, James, and John.  If any of these were to be of a sibling, I would set aside Martin (as before, not a name in this family) and John (having already been given in that generation) … leaving Michael and James.

Searching the headstones in Straide cemetery, I found one for a Michael Mulroy who would have been born ca. 1829 and could potentially fit into the family, given that birth date.  However, his wife’s name was Hanoria, a name that never is repeated in this family’s follow-on generations.

So, my purpose in this post (and its lengthy discussion) is to elicit a dialogue with someone who may have records or knowledge of the Mulroy families in Templemore (Straide) in the 1850’s that could link them to the five known siblings who immigrated to the U.S.

The DNA data base reflects only one, distant, connection with a living County Mayo Mulroy.  He traces his ancestors to Glenisland / Islandeady … not that far from Straide; but, the generational timeline we’ve worked out doesn’t have our lines close in the early to mid-1800’s.

You really have done a lot of work on your  Mulroy line. There is no Parish Liaison for Templemore parish. There is a local Irish liaison for Turlough parish. Maybe you can send a message to that person. They may have some insights into Muroys in the area. Try turlough@irelandxo.com  ( I think that is correct).

If you belong to Facebook, you may want to join the Mayo Genealogy Group and make a short posting there to see if you get any action.

Finally www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census   is my web site. If you query Mulroys in Templemore parish, you will get 15 households. The output format is more user friendly compared to using the National Archives site.

Good luck! Let me know if I can do anything further.

Dympna Joyce is the liaison for Turlough.

I also did some checking on the Mayo Genealogy group on Facebook. There is a James Mulroy in the group. He is part of the Glenisland Mulroys but he researches all Mulroys. I think he lived in Westport.

  • Roger, I see your posts with Chuck. I am the gr-gr-granddaughter of Michael and Hanoria Mulroy. They are both buried in the Strade Abbey Cemetery. I am in touch with James Mulroy (Westport, Mayo) and his cousin Courtnee Mulroy from SD, USA. I am sure you are familiar with the Mulroy website, Mulroys.org. If not, they have lots of info on hundreds of Mulroys from Mayo. Chuck Mulroy was kind enough to send me to the site of Michael and Honora's headstone. Apparently they had 4 sons, Michael, Patrick, James (my gr-grandfather) and I don't know the name of the 4th son.

I hope to be in Mayo, with my cousins, for research/vacation, in May. I was in Ireland last year, fell in love, and can't wait to return. I am also looking for my Murphy ancestors (almost impossible).

    Take care,
    Pat Murphy-Zezelic
