An extended group of Shields family members, born between 1830 and 1840, immigrated to western Pennsylvania between 1850 and 1860. They included Honora (born 1833, the daughter of Francis Shields) and her possible brothers Michael (b. 1832) and George (b. 1840), and possible cousins George (b. @1830) and Francis (b. @1835). All were Roman Catholic.  A single marriage record indicates they came from County Galway.  Is there any parish in the County were the name Shields is more likely to be found?

Any hints or help will be much appreciated.  Thank you.

I checked the 1856 Griffiths Valuation survey head of household listing for Co. Galway. There was only one Shields entry for the entire county in the town of Gort, Kilmacduagh civil parish. There were no Sheilds entries. The more common name was Sheil and there were about 60 entries in many parishes. The most prevalent was Ballynakill parish.

  • Thank you, Roger, for the insight.  I know that names can be altered over time.  Maybe this is true here.  I will move "sheils" up in my searches.
