Hi,

I am researching my husbands family. The details I have are for Willliam Usher born 1827 in Galway, died 1858 in Victoria, Australia. Hisa parents are Patrick Usher and Matilda Dyon. I have hit a brick wall going any further back than Patrick and Matilda. If anyone has any more details than that I would be very grateful.

Many Thanks,

Gill

  • Hi Gill,

You might want to have a look on a site called www.rootsireland.ie.

I searched for William Usher born 1827 parents Patrick & Matilda but got no results. However, I did get a result when Matilda Dyon was omitted and the years were expanded to 1827 + - 5 - a baptism of William HESSION 1823.

I then tried for Patrick born 1800 + - 5 and got 1 match - Patrick HESSION born 1800 Galway. I got lucky and found the parish - Tuam Roman Catholic.

I googled Hession an early form of Usher and found thatn this was the case.

There were 3 marriage records of Patrick Hession/Hessian in Galway 1815,1820 & 1823 but there were no matches when Matilda Dyon was included.

rootsireland.ie is a pay site but they have 40% off at the moment. You would need to purchase the record to get the parents' names and the parishes.

I can't attach the records on this site.

The Tithe Applotments (1823-37 free to search) have 10 Ushers (including 2 Williams) in Galway.

  • Thanks for your help Col...I will need to explore this new avenue...my husbands Aunt (in her 80s) is a bit stingy with the original documents she obtained...so I may have to reinvent the wheel...hahaha

  • Hi Gill

Us(s)her is an uncommon name in Galway and that is both a blessing and a hindrance

Looking at the census there is one family with a William http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Oranmore/Rocklands/1377375/

That doesn't point to them as yours but it may give a hint

Were your Usshers Catholic or Church of Ireland ? That could assist even more

Unfortunately civil and church records are rare and while, like the census record, you may get the right name it may not be the right person so treat with extreme caution

Dyon is an extremely unusual name and possibly may be a mis-transcription Best to verify that it was her actual name If so again a blessing and a hindrance

Matilda is another uncommon name and again it would be nore a Church of Ireland name than a Catholic name

There is an Ussher family in my parish - their great grandfather married in - and hopefully I will be able to see them later and see if they may have any info on the wider Ussher family

  • Hi Martin,

Thank you for your time and effort. My best guess, at this point in time, is that he most probably was Church of Ireland...my husbands family is nominally Church of England, and William married an English widow in 1857, before he died in 1859. I will ask my husband to try to contact his Aunt, she may have more information.

    Regards,

    Gill

That should help out even more then The only William that is recorded in the 1901 census belonged to this family http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/property-show.jsp?id=790 Does his aunt know if the family had some means and land in Ireland ?

Williamis is here http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Oranmore/Rocklands/1377375/ so if that is a line worth pursuing let me know and I will see what else can be found about them

  • Hi Martin,

William migrated to Victoria, Australia around 1855, probably in search of fame and fortune...there was a big Gold rush at the time. He married Harriet Cook Drewitt in 1857 in Port Fairy, Victoria and bought/settled land near Ruyanup. He died in 1859, just after his son William Henry was born, leaving Harriet with 5 children (3 of her own to her first marriage). We have quite a lot of detail after that, but I hit a big blank trying to get further back...I have sent a message to my husbands Aunt, but she is in her 8os and is a bit precious about giving out information...lol

I will let you know if I get a reply.

    Cheers,

    Gill

  • sounds like that family then http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/estate-show.jsp?id=1048 A younger brother possibly If that were the case then more than likely there would be records as Church of Ireland records would be available

Have you been in touch with other Galway Usshers ? http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~usher/usherirl/html/galway.htm

I saw Kevin Ussher briefly today at a football match but as we were celebrating our parish winning the County title it wasn't convenient to ask Will stop by his another time to do so His great grandfather married in Will have to find out where from

  • Hi Martin,

I have had an email from my husbands Aunt, she was told by her father that William Usher was born a Roman Catholic but changed to Presbyterian when he arrived in Australia...probably due to his new wife Harriet (whom he met in Australia). Jean states that Williams birth certificate shows him as being born in Galway...she, of course, wont send me a copy...lol

    Cheers,

    Gill
