As a fellow Limerick Fox descendant from Doon I congratulate you on coming on board. I can assume you are of the De Bhosc clan as most Limerick Foxes are , and hence of Norman extraction. As a genealogist I have not found Foxes in the Tithes census 1826-1831 or in Griffith Land Valuation of 1850 in the parish so they have moved within other parishes locally. A birth record for James exist in 1831.

  • Hi,

I am writing in hopes that you can help.  I have a baptism cert for my GGGrand Uncle Thomas Shanahan who was baptised in the vestry of St. Patricks in Limerick City in 1844 by the Rev George Butler.  His godparents were listed as Honora PECKHAM and Patt FOX.  I have been told that sometimes FOX was an alias used for the surname SHANAHAN.  Do you know if this is true or not?  Is it wrong of me to assume that this Patt Fox had to be at least age 21 (because he was a baptism sponsor?)  If the answer to that is yes, then I suppose this Patt Fox had to have been born by 1823 or earlier.  Know of any Patt or Patrick Fox's in your family lines born around that time or earlier?

Also Thomas Shanahan baptised 1844 drowned as a young child.  The family story is that he drowned in a river near their home; my guess since they were living in Limerick City is that he must have drowned in the River Shannon.  Because the drowning was accidental, shouldn't there be either a coroner's report or an inquest of some sort?  Where do I look for such records?  I've scoured lots of newspapers for the event (occurred between 1844 and 1856) but have come up totally empty handed.

    Any thoughts?

    Best Regards,

    Kathy Rhodes
