Hello from New York City

I am researching my Great Grandmother's (Mary Anne Fogarty Cronin) family and hope to make contact with relatives in Co. Tipperary.

John Fogarty and Mary Quirke were married 11 Feb 1877 (Church Parish) Ballinahinch.  St. Joseph's Church, Diocese of Cashel, Shallee, Nenagh.    I have the Fogarty family living in Shallee and also Curaheen.

They had 10 Children:

Johanna: Born 21 Nov 1877 Civil Parish: Silvermines.  Moved to USA in 1900

Patrick: Born 21 Jan 1879 Civil Parish: Silvermines.   Moved to USA pre 1900

Michael: 25 Jan 1881 Civil Parish Silvermines.   Moved to USA 1903

Mary Anne: 20 May 1883 Civil Parish: Silvermines.  Moved to USA 1909 (My Great Grandmother)

John: 16 Feb 1885.  Civil Parish: Silvermines. Still living in Curaheen, Co. Tipperary on 1911 Census of Ireland

Thomas: 10 Mar 1886.  Civil Parish: Silvermines.  Died 1955 in Curaheen, Co. Tipperary

James: 1 Aug 1888.  Civil Parish: Silvermines.  Died 1953 in Curaheen, Co. Tipperary

Philip: 15 Oct 1889.  Civil Parish: Newport.  Living in Curaheen on 1901 and 1911 Census

Bridget: 27 May 1891.   Civil Parish: Silvermines.  Not on 1901 or 1911 Census

Catherine:  1 Oct 1892.  Civil Parish: Silvermines.   Not on 1901 or 1911 Census

Mary Anne Fogarty Cronin also had a cousin Winifred Quirke Hayes.   She was born around 1911 and married Patrick Hayes also of Nenagh.    Winifred lived at St. Conlons Nursing Home in Nenagh in the early 1980's.   She passed away 18 Oct 1986.   Her husband Patrick Hayes passed away 14 Apr 1969.   They had two sons Denis Hayes (Wife Mena) who lived in Shannon and Larry Hayes (Never married) who stayed in Nenagh.

Any information and assistance is greatly appreciated

Thank you

Pete Cronin

  • Hi Pete,

Winifred Quirke Hayes and Patrick Hayes raised their family outside The Silvermines, Nenagh,Co Tipperary. They are buried next to Killoscully Catholic Church.

I believe Winifred and Patrick grew up in a small community called Shallee .

    Larry Hayes is deceased.

Patrick Hayes had 4 Sisters. My Grandmother was a sister of Patrick Hayes. I hope this information helps.

  • Hello Teresa,

Thank you very much for your reply.  Yes this is the family.   They did grow up in Shallee.   My family visited in the 1950's and again in the 1980's.   I do have pictures somewhere.   I was not aware that Larry passed away.   Would you happen to know when Winifred and Patrick were married?   I am unable to locate this information.

  • Searching for family of Thomas Fogarty, b.1824 in Nenagh. He enlisted in the 69th Foot at Tralee on 22nd of June 1842. They were in Ireland until 1845 when they moved to Portsmouth. Thomas transferred to the 59th Foot in 1847 to serve with an elder brother in Ireland. In June 1849 they had a 8 month trip to Hong Kong and Thomas servered there for approximately 3 yrs only. He rejoined the service companies in April 1858. don. know his whereabouts just prior but my Great Grandmother, Mary Fogarty, was born March 22 in 1858 or 59 supposedly in China.

His regiment left China for the Cape of Good Hope from 1859-1861. They returned to England in December of 1861 and Thomas reached his 21st year of service and in 1863 at Aldershot he opted to discharge out to pension. His intended place of residence is shown as "Hamilton N.B." Not sure if "N.B." stands for New Brunswick? There is a Hamilton Pennsylvania, and Ohio, USA where Mary Ann is found in census records and is listed as born in China. She died in Akron, Ohio on March 11, 1950. Family legend says she came to North America when she was 6 yrs. old = 1863 plus or minus. Do not know mother's first name, why she was in China, whether or not mother died there at birth. May be relationship with Ryans or Duffys in U.S.

  • Another ancestor of Mary Ann Fogarty living in Lexington, KY.  Headed to Ireland this spring and looking forward to seeing the land she left early in the 1900's as a young woman.
