From New Zealand I am trying to find our great grandfather William Shaw who came from Tipperary. He arrived in Lyttelton on the Sir Edward Paget in July 1856. He was a member of the Irish Constabulary and joined our Police Force. In 1860 he married a Mary Murphy from Galway and died here in 1912 aged 82. Who were his parents, where in Tipperary was he from -any information please.

  • Hi Julie,

I have a bit of news for you on the Shaw line.

rootsireland.ie has a record of William Shaw born Tipperary 1835 (I searched baptisms/births 1830 + - 5 and that was the only one that came up; actually there are 2 but I assume thay are the same one).

If you purchase the record you will get the parents' names and the parish.

With the parents' names you mught be able to go back even further. You could also check on the Tithe Applotments 1823-27 (free to search -just google) to find where they were then.

  • Copies of service records for the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) are kept in several different locations but if you are outside Ireland you may find it easier to pay to get a copy sent to you. In which case contact the PSNI museum in Belfast. They offer that service. If you look at their website you will see the information that the RIC record is likely to hold.
