Greetings,

I am trying to determine where I would look for copies of birth/baptism, marriage and death/burial records for a family from the Killyleagh area.

James Moreland was born 6 Dec 1844 in Tullyveery.  His parents were John Moreland and Elizabeth Killan (spelling?).  The Griffiths valuation records John Moreland on Cow Street in Killyleagh.  James married Elizabeth Burns daughter of James Burns and Margaret about 1867.  Based on records from familysearch.org James and Elizabeth had several children in Killyleagh and Downpatrick in the 1860's and 1870's.  I am currently working on obtaining the civil records from 1864 on.

A sister of James Moreland named Mary Ann married John Kearney about 1859.  John Kearney was from Belfast. They also had several children in County Down prior to civil registration.

I beleive these folks were Catholic.  Any suggestions on where to search for Catholic records from the 1800's for this area would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Jim

  • Killyleagh is in the RC parish of Kilmore. According to this site, the UHF have copies of baptisms from 1837 and marriages from 1896. (That?s a pay to view site). The originals should be with the parish priest, but it doesn?t appear that there are any other copies you can access, anywhere.

You should check with the parish priest but I suspect there are no earlier records for this parish.
