Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.com

I'm seeking information about the origins and family of a great grandmother, Margaret Broderick. She came from Limerick (source, Birth Cert. of daughter Helen, my grandmother). She migrated to New Zealand and the first record of her there is her marriage on 27 Feb 1887 in Christcurch, NZ. Recorded as a spinster, she married Benjamin Thomas Leathwick from Middlesex, England at the Church of the Most Blessed Sacrament. At time of marriage she was a Servant.

Her birth year could be 1859 (age 30 on 21 Nov 1889 at birth registration of my grandmother) or 1858 (age 28 on 27 February when married) or 1853 (calculated from age 77 recorded when she died on 15 Nov 1930). Margaret died and was buried in Christchurch, NZ.

The names of her parents are on her marriage certificate. Note that Margaret signed the registration with "her mark" not a signature, so presumably she could not write, therefore she could not write the names of her parents to make the names clear to the registrar. The registrar's writing makes their names unclear.

Her father seems to be John Michael Broderick (looks like "Brodureth") Farmer. Her mother is Ellen Broderick (again looks like Brodureth). The maiden name might be Haegan. The bride's surname appears to be "Brodureth" but the registrar or someone else, has rewritten the surnames of bride and groom to make them clear, and Margaret's surname is "Broderick".

I haven't been able to find additional information on Ancestry, Familysearch or immigration passenger lists. It would be most useful to know what parish she came from. I'd like to confirm her parents and find out if she had siblings.

Thanks for your interest.

  • I would suggest you try searching the records for Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick.  I have found many Brodericks in that parish druing my own research on the Broderick family.
