My 2nd great grandfather was Andrew Dougherty born about 1841. He states in an English Census that he was from Mayo County, Ireland. The earliest information I have on him is that he is in England in 1861 living in Burnley, Lancashire, England. He married my 2nd great grandmother, Selina Holland, in 1865 in Wigan, Lancashire, England. Andrew and Selina lived in Burradon in Tynemouth, according to the census in 1881 and in 1891 he lived in Hunsley, England. I believe he died in 1905 in Leeds, England.
Andrew and Selina had 6 children, all my information is from the Census, one of which was my 1st great grandmother, Mary. Mary spelled her name as Dougherty but the Census had all different versions and her siblings I believe went by Dockerty.
That is all I know about Andrew. I don't know much about Mary as she was deceased by the time I was born and the stories that she did pass on to my father may have not been the correct ones.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
1861 he lists his occupation as a Cotton Stripper and Grinder
1881 and 1891 list his occupation as a Coal miner.
Thank you,
Jenn Smith

Hi Jenn,
Thank you very much for your message.
Unfortunately, it may be difficult to find information without a more specific place of origin. Most Irish record sources- church records, land records, census records- are based on specific locations. Until you know a specific location within Ireland, preferably a parish or placename, it may be difficult to do anything more with these records.
Do you have any documentation pertaining to the family that mentions any place names in Mayo at all? This can include wills, marriage/death records, census records, letters, diary entries etc. For more information on UK government records check the National Archives at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
There are some places where you can search online, however it may be difficult to discern whether the results are relevant to your family or not without more information:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
Do you know Andrew?s father?s name? If you do you could try searching for him in the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century. These do not offer an genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. There are two:
The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-1864) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Some other websites that you may find useful are:

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,

Good morning. According to relatives I have found on Ancestry, this Dougherty/Doherty/Dockerty family traveled throughout Ireland and then left to live in Scotland. Though Andrew's Marriage Certificate states his father's name was Andrew, these individuals have his parents as William and Rebecca. "William Dockerty and his wife Rebecca Ferrie both born in Co Fermanagh, then moved to Co Mayo - both in Ireland. Later emigrated to Glasgow, Scotland and worked in the docks - see Scottish census 1861." I do not know if this information is accurate. I asked how this information was found and have not received a response. How do I find out if this is in fact the same family or disprove these individuals as my 3rd great grandparents? Thank you for any help and/or suggestions. Jennifer Braham Smith
