Hello, I am trying to see if a woman by the name of Johanna Barry born April 17, 1870, is possibly my great grandmother, Annie Barry, born on April 16, 1872. There is also another Anne Barry, born April 21, 1872 in County Kerry.

My great grandmother's death certificate reads as: Anna Sheehan. She died June 13, 1925 in NYC. She was born in Ireland, April 16, 1872. Parents: John Barry. Her mother is not listed. Both parents born in Ireland as well.

Here are the possible matches:

I am wondering if there are any grave inscriptions in these areas, so I can see if any one of these Barrys was my great grandmother. I tried looking at the Irish census lists, but could not find her, and she was not listed with the family either.

Also, my great grandfather, Daniel Sheehan, was supposedly from County Limerick, as per his naturalization record. Some of the information is wrong, so I don't know what to believe.

His death certificate reads as follows: Daniel Sheehan December 10, 1870 Ireland Parents: Daniel Sheehan and Margaret Barry (same surname as my great grandmother). Don't know if they were related?

However, although many censuses list the 2 having different arrival dates, there was a Johanna Barry, age 20, supposedly on the same boat as my great grandfather in May 15, 1893 from Ellis Island. On the other hand, he even listed his wife as arriving in 1888. Could this be a coincidence? I'm absolutely confused.

One other thing about the census; in 1910: they were listed as "Irish, Irish" (Irish-speaking) before Ireland was divided. Some of their neighbors were listed as "Irish, English" (English speaking).

My paternal grandmother's name was Mary Sheehan.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Does anybody possibly know about the whereabouts of the 2 Barry listed in the Irish church record links above?

Thank you.

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so you should be able to find civil records of all of these births. If you can find Daniel?s birth record it will give you a place of origin. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here is their website:http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

With regards to which is the correct birth record for Annie; It is more likely that the one from Lixnaw is the correct one as the father?s name match. The ages of Irish immigrants often changes from document to document to the fact that the birth date is out by a couple of years is not unusual.

In order to find out what graveyards transcriptions are available it may be an idea to contact the Local Studies Department of Kerry Library, here is the link to their contact page:

  • Hi Seanmacd, thank you for your help, but I don't think any of those people listed are my ancestors.
    Thank you again.

  • Hi Emma Carty, thank you for your help.  I appreciate it.  I am also trying to locate County Limerick records for my great grandfather, Daniel Sheehan (Annie Barry Sheehan's husband).

However, I found a possible record that may be his parents, but the marriage takes place in County Kerry.  I cannot find any other records for these people; in other words, no records of children being born.  According to my ggf's death certificate, Daniel was said to be born Dec. 10, 1870 to Daniel Sheehan and Mary/Margaret Barry (same surname as his wife).  His naturalization record states he was from Limerick.  Their daughter's name was Mary.  Mary's Godmother/sponsor in North Tarrytown, NY was Bridget Moran.

A possible record of his parents... maybe???:
