William and Jane lived in the townland of Bovagh in the civil parish of Aghadowey. Below are the 1901 and 1911 census records for them. There are only 23-24 Roxboroughs in the 1901 and 1911 census so it is easy to find them. www.census.nationalarchives.ie

Looks like Jane died at the end of 1919. i could not locate a death index record for William. I would use www.familysearch.org to search for baptismal, birth, marriage and death index records. If you want to get a copy of the death record for Jane, contact the GRO www.groireland.ie Fill out their form and provide the quarter/year of death, registration district (Coleraine) and the volume and page number ( 1 and 342) Cost 4 euros. Someone local will have to help on where family members are interred.

Griffiths Valuation for 1859 for Bovagh shows Richard Roxborough farming on plot 14a, where he had a farmhouse, outbuildings and just over 9 acres. (That farm today looks to be just off the Cullyrammer Rd). That changed to William in 1885. So it?s possible that William?s father was Richard. If you get a copy of his marriage certificate, it should confirm that.
The farm passed from Wm Roxborough to Thomas Kyle in 1926.
There are no people named Roxborough in the current phone book for Northern Ireland. However there are about 30 on the electoral roll. (Pay to view). You might want to contact them.

Thank you very much. I know that they were in this area for at least 100 years, probably came from Scotland I think as they keep going over the border. I found the census before but it is hard to bring the family up to a point where any of them would be living, but thanks for the idea on the voter's roll.
Any other suggestions, feel free :)

Thank you very much. I do use family search for most of my research, and it is fantastic. I just have trouble when you have 2 William's & you don't know which child belongs with which William. I wish they had other census available as that would take us right back lol I do appreciate your time & Roxborough is unusual enough. I think it is also spelled Rosborough as I have come across that spelling & have assumed it is the same family. What do you think? It is online, the parish of moneydig church registers.
Thanks for all your help, and any other suggestions don't hesitate to send them as I'm open to try.

Catherine,
That the family were Presbyterian, had a name commonly found in Scotland and lived in Co Derry tells you they are almost certainly of Scottish origins. (Presbyterianism was established in Scotland and brought to Ireland by Scots settlers. Prior to that it was unknown in Ireland). The main settlement of Scots in Co Derry was in the 1600s (100,000 Scots settled in Ireland in the 1600s, representing about 10% of the entire Scottish population of the time), and so statistically that?s when your ancestors probably arrived. Unfortunately there are almost no records back to the 1600s and so tracing back to Scotland is effectively impossible.
Tracing forward from 1911 to today can be tricky. There are few publicly accessible records for that period. You could try spending a day at GRONI in Belfast looking up Roxborough births, deaths and marriages in the period 1911 ? 2013 to see if you can track any down. (Your family appear to have moved out of the immediate area and so some detective work seems inevitable).
Rosborough could well be the same as Roxborough. The idea of a single or correct spelling for a surname or a place name is very much a recent phenomenon and before that, especially in Ireland, there was no consistency. Names were spelled phonetically and each variation was down to the whim of the particular person (often an official) recording the information. With family names you will see the spelling change all the time as the records go back. This rarely indicates a particular deliberate decision to alter the spelling. Not everyone was literate, but even when they were, exact spelling simply wasn?t something they bothered about. In addition to varying the actual spelling, acquiring/dropping O? or Mac prefixes was also very common.

Hello, I am a Roxborough by birth. My Grandfather was William Roxborough. I believe we are from the same line of Roxboroughs. Yes, my grandmother was Jane Dempsey and when she died William married a much younger woman and she is my Dad James Roxborough's mother. Please get in touch with me, my brother and I are merely trying to fill in the gaps, we have a photo of Williams third wife with some of their children including my Dad, taken after William died. I know when he died and really want to help you too.

Hi Catherine,
you have a lot of relatives in N I.
My grand mother was Rachel Roxborough and as previously noted she did marry William John Gilmore on 3/7/1900 a farmer from 9 Mullan Rd Kilrea Co Derry. (It is still my family home)
They had three childern, Nellie, Robert (Bobby my father) and Mary.
Nellie married Sam Alexander who lived on the next farm and had nine childern (six still alive) Bobby married my mother Jennie Thompson from Aghadowey, had five childern all alive, and Mary married Alex Smyth, had two childern (one deceased).
I don't know any of your earlier family history other than what you have discovered, but it is of interest that my grandfather (William) his sister Mary married Robert Kyle they had two sons (William and Thomas) and Thomas seems to have inherited your family farm. They were in fact related thru Rache, a point i had overlooked earlier.l
Hope this is of interest my email is albert48@tpg.com.au I live in australia

Catherine, I am a Roxborough by birth. Another lady suggested I put more details on this site, on reflection I had better not publicise the information I have, it is not only personal but astonishing and if you can email me on myblackbubba@mail.com (name comes from my beautiful black dog). I'd be happy to share with you as I need to know the connection and sure you would also. Cheers, Sheila (nee Roxborough). I am doing my family tree on both sides, came to a halt with my dads side but Ive dug deeper lately and come up with things that need confirmation.
