Ballymacarrett Armstrongs and Abernathys

First Generation

James ABERNETHY was born in Ireland about 1795, likely close to Belfast in either County Antrim or Down.

James ABERNETHY and Ann GRACIE were married about 1815, likely in Belfast or nearby. Ann GRACIE was born in Ireland about 1795. At least some, if not all, of the Abernethy family immigrated to Adelaide Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada about 1842. In Canada the family started out Free Church but soon switched to Presbyterian.

James ABERNETHY and Ann GRACIE had at least the following children:

Jane ABERNETHY, born 22 May 1819,and married John ARMSTRONG about 1835, likely near Belfast. She died 22 Sep 1895 in Adelaide Township.

James ABERNETHY was born on 6 May 1822 in Belfast, Ireland. He never married and died on 14 Mar 1909 in Strathroy, Ontario, Canada.

Jamima ABERNETHY, was born 14 Dec 1824 and baptized at St Anne’s in Belfast (Church of Ireland). She married James SHIELDS and died 15 Dec 1901 in Adelaide Township.

Second Generation

Jane ABERNETHY married. John ARMSTRONG. John ARMSTRONG was born in Ireland about 1811, likely close to Belfast in either County Antrim or Down. The family immigrated to Adelaide Township about 1842. John ARMSTRONG died about 1853 in Adelaide Township. In Canada the family started out Anglican but soon switched to Presbyterian. Their son William was christened in St. Anne's Church of Ireland in Belfast.

John ARMSTRONG and Jane ABERNETHY had, at least, the following children:

                Ann ARMSTRONG was born in 1835 in Ireland. It is unknown if she ever married.

                William ARMSTRONG, was born 10 April 1839, in Ballymacarrett,County Down, Ireland and baptized at St Anne’s in Belfast (Church of Ireland). He married Eliza EARLY, 4 Feb 1867, in Middlesex County, Ontario and died 10 Nov 1899 in Harbor Beach, Huron County, Michigan, USA.

                Joseph Alexander ARMSTRONG was born in 1844 in Ontario, probably in Adelaide. Apparently he never married.

         Mary J ARMSTRONG was born in 1847 in Ontario, probably in Adelaide. It is not known if she ever married.

                Jamina ARMSTRONG, was born 11 Nov 1849 in Ontario, probably in Adelaide and married Thomas H KINCADE about 1877, probably in Adelaide. She died 1 May 1923, in Huron Township, Huron County, Michigan, USA.

         Franklin ARMSTRONG was born 23 Dec 1850 in Ontario, probably in Adelaide. He married Martha DOWDING, 11 Apr 1874, in Strathroy, Ontario and died 14 Jun 1921, in Govan, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Jamima ABERNETHY was born on 14 Dec 1824 in Ireland and married James SHIELDS on 22 Mar 1850 in Adelaide Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. They had at least 6 children.
