Hi, I am looking for information regarding Bridget Murphy born 29/07/1901 to William Murphy and Catherine (Kate) Ryan.  I know she gave birth to my grandfather on 06/01/1925 but after that she seems to disappear.  My grandfather was raised by his mother's brother Edmond and his wife Hanora.

  • Hello James,

Your search is quite unusual in that your are trying to trace forward Bridget's life while all of us are tracing back through the past.

I found Bridgets baptismal record on www.rootsireland.ie.  Most of these records are only up to around 1920 but there are some that go to around 1930 or so.  I found a few marriage records for a Bridget Murphy on this site before and after 1925.  The problem is that the name is quite common, and as you don't know if or who she married then I think you may be wasting your time with this.  There are no records that I am aware of passenger lists to the UK.  You could try passenger lists to US or Australia etc.   What was the name of your grandfather?  Look at familysearch.org to see if there are any marriages between a Bridget Murphy and a man with the same name as your grandfather?? Longshot

I'm afraid that I can't really help you at all.  You would probably need to speak with some really old person from that family or parish who may have an inkling s to where she went.  Don't underestimate this resource and go about it as soon as you can, as none of us are getting any younger.

I'm sorry that I cant help,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Hi Anne,

Thanks for your swift reply.  My grandfather has the same name as me, James Murphy.  On his birthcert his mother is named as Bridget Murphy but his father's name is not mentioned, most likely meaning that Bridget was not married.  I am wondering if maybe because of this status she might have been sent to an institution or asylum?  I just find it odd that her brother (Edmond who died in 1926 in a horse related accident) and his wife Hanora Bagnell would have "just" taken my grandfather in and raised him.  There was a story that a "Delia" Murphy had gone to England, married and had 2 children there but my father and I suspect this is a fairytale.  We have tried asking these questions to the people who might (and probably do) know but the info is not forthcoming.  I've also heard a story of an Australian entrant in the Rose of Tralee who tried to trace her relatives in Knockainey / Hospital and my extended family knew she was looking but didn't want to talk to her cos her father (or more likely grandad) was some black sheep of family.  But I would like to find out, more for my dad to be honest, what happened to his Granny, Bridget Murphy.  I know that the Murphy family plot is in the big catholic church graveyard in Hospital.  Beyond that it's been very difficult to find out anything.

We also think that William Murphy (Bridget's father) and possibly some of his sons worked on a farm in that area belonging to O'Grady. Is this something you know of?

  • Hi James

I know of Murphys who worked on OGradys farm and quarry in Knockainey. There is a photo taken in the 1920s in the quarry, with Murphy's in it.

We'll see what we can find out...
