I am trying to find out if and when John and Bridget came to Australia - so far unsuccessfully.

They were married on 7th February 1837 in what is today the church parish of Tulla.

Any info any one has wold be welcome. Thanks for your time. - Laurie

  • Dear Laurie:

Many thanks for your query to Ireland Reaching Out.

I have had a look for you in Griffith's Valuation.  This was a record of all householders taken throughout Ireland.  County Clare was enumerated in 1855.  There doesn't appear to be any O'Halloran in Caherloghan at that time, and it might be assumed that John and Bridget O'Halloran had left by then.

The online resources at the Clare County Library are excellent.  There has been a lot of voluntary transcription work done by numerous people.  If you log onto their site at www.clarelibrary.ie/genealogy and click on the right hand side under "Donated Materials", you will see lists of transcriptions done.  One of these lists has to do with emigrant ships landing in Australia and in the U.S. You may be able to find their names on one of those lists.  If you like, I can look at the register for you to see if there were any children born and they left with a family.  Please let me know.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Dear Jane - how good is it to have someone actually "out there", interested and willing to help. Thank you. Our family folk lore here is that John and Bridget had 10 children (fact based on baptismal records in Clare). We have thought that John and Bridget both came to Australia, at different times (perhaps 1860 for John) and perhaps 1865 for Bridget), and some of the children came too (fact). Strangely, though, the State of Victoria Death Registry has no record of the deaths of either John or Bridget! So any help, hints, tips would be a help! I am working on shipping lists meanwhile! Regards, Laurie H

  • Hi Laurie:

I have just come across this link and I thought that I would share it with you.

    http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=….

Apparently using the above link, you may be able to find the death records for your O'Hallorans with just using a few terms.  In addition, I will have a quick look for you in another place and let you know.

    All the best,

    Jane.

  • Dear Laurie,

Yes they did come to Australia ,( if its the same couple I'm researching ) but not sure when.-still trying to find out. John died in Macksville NSW in 1905 aged 80yrs & Bridget died in Kempsey NSW  in 1936 . Apparently they had a daughter  Theresa born in India in 1861  while John was in the army , returned to Ireland  , & then came to Australia sometime after that . They had a daughter Winifred  born in Macksville NSW who married 1.Thomas Francis Clough then 2 John Brouggy'.I haven't found out any more at this stage ,but will let you know if I do

    Regards
