So I just came back from a trip to Ireland with my 87 year old father who wanted to try to find his great grandparents. The information we have is that John O'kane, born 1828 at Baronscourt Estate to John O'kane and Bridgett Hamill. He emigrated to the US and landed ultimately in San Francisco in 1852. We have records that he sailed around The Horn to San Francisco from New York. He married an Irish lass, in San Francisco about 1860. Mary Ellen Barrett born 1832 in Fermoy, according to our records, father John Barrett of Fermoy and Margeret (Unknown) from Youghal. Still at a dead end! I have been all over the internet trying to make some connections.

Then I married a Daily. I thought they were from County Cork, but the recent family document that I have says John Daily Sr, born County Tyrone, 1755. Wondering where to go from here!

    One suggestion related to the Barretts. I have a research book that indicates that records for Fermoy Catholic church go back to 1828. The church is St. Patrick's. You may want to contact them regarding baptismal records for the Barretts. I checked for Ardstraw parish and their records only go back to 1843.

  • Roger, I'm pretty sure that my great grandmother was born in Newtonstewart in 1854 or possibly 1855.

    Do you have any other information about the parish in Ardstraw? I found an Ardstraw West and an Ardstraw East but they are listed as being in Derry. Would that be consistent? Griffith's Valuation shows her father living in Ardstraw in 1860 and he died in 1895 in Newtownstewart.

    Do you have an idea of what we could find by visiting the parishes? We are going to Ireland next month.

    Maybe you can e-mail or call them to find out what research you can do onsite.

    I have a research book that lists all the townlands in Ireland (over 60,000) as of the 1851 census. There were no townlands listed in Co. Derry that were called Ardstraw, Arstraw East or West. Obviously, names change over time.
