I'm looking for information about my g g g grandmother Bridget Beisty. She married John Devaney from Cloonlavish, Claremorris Mayo (at time of marriage) in 1870 in Knock RC Parish. Bridget's info indicates she was from Adergoole at time of her marriage. She lived in Ahena Tagheen for a time with her Aunt Catherine Devaney and uncle Patrick Vahey (Knockagraffy). They had 10 children Austin, Patrick Henry, William, Martin, Ellen (my great grandmother) (Buckley), Mary "Marie" (Tanner), Bridget, Thomas, Honoria "Nora" (Gildea), and Catherine (Vahey) (Groghan). Patrick, Martin, Ellen, Mary, Nora all emigrated to the Boston, MA USA area. Catherine lived in Claremorris for a while and moved to England. Austin perished in the Maypole Mining Accident in 1908. As of 1901, Bridget Beisty Devaney was residing in Claremorris upper with her son Martin nd Austin and mother in law Winifred. The family possibly lived in Claremorris Upper prior to the 1901 census. Relatives of Bridget Beisty's include Curry. Relatives also include Flatley, and possibly Hession. I'm stuck in my research and hope to find the names of John Devaney's and Bridget Beisty's parents and siblings...any help would be greatly appreciated. Johns parents are possibly William and Winifred. Bridget's father might be Thomas Beisty. Thank you!!!

Hi Jill.
Thank you for your message.
If Bridget and John were married in 1870 there will be a record of it in civil records as civil registration began in Ireland in 1864. These civil marriage records record the couple?s fathers? names and occupations. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
To get their mothers? names you will probably have to look at their birth records. However, to look at church records you need to know the parish where they were born.
A useful website is the Irish TImes as they give a map of Mayo with all the RC parishes listed and gives an overview of what records are available in each parish and also where there are copies available:
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/mayorc.htm
It may be an idea to look into records in Kilcolman:
Crossboyne & Taugheen:
Knock:
Most of these records are held locally so it may be an idea to contact the local parish priest for possible assistance. Alternatively, you could contact the South Mayo Family Research Centre as they have some copies available, however a fee may apply. Here is their email:
