  • My name is Eileen Flanagan Wood. I am looking for information on the Flanagans from Castlepollard/Faughalstown/Knockeyon area. My Great Grandfather Michael Joseph Flanagan was born in April 1862 in Castlepollard, County Westmeath. His parents were Margaret Creighton (Craten?) and Owen Flanagan. I know that at one time Owen Flanagan farmed land in Ranahinch because his name appeared on the Griffith's Valuation. My Great Grandfather had several siblings: Margaret (Maggie), Patrick, William, George, Eugene, Brigid, Mary Ann, Kathleen, and Nan.

Please contact me at : EileenD256@hotmail.com if you know anything concerning this family.  Thank you.

Hello again. As a suggestion, you should post a brand new message rather than add onto an existing thread. No one will see you comment except me because I go look at all the items posted.

I checked Roots Ireland and Michael was actually baptized in April 1859. I presume he made himself younger at some point in his life. Below is a transcription of his baptismal record. There were also records for siblings William 1857, Elizabeth 1861,  Mary 1863, Owen 1869 and George 1872. Not sure about the gap between Mary and Owen. Baptisms were in the Coole RC church which is just to the south of Castlepollard RC parish. Here is the link to the parish register for Coole.

The record for owen indicated they lived in Knockion and the George record showed Garthlandstown.

Gartlandstown is the likely townland in Faughalstown civil parish

There were no Flanagans in Gartlandstown in the 1901 census.

    Good Morning,

I'm related to Eileen and we're slowly putting our ancestors together. We're trying to work back from Owen Flanagan and Margaret Creighton Knockeyon Ranahinch Faughalstown. We think that The Flanagans have been on Knockeyon for a while but that Margaret might be a daughter of Elizabeth Creighton and maybe William Creighton. Elizabeth may be a Dunleavy. This family lived on the Coolure Estate during the Griffiths Survey. Could the Dunleavys and Creightons have come from Mayo with Elizabeth Cuffe of the Pakenhams at nearby Tullynally? All within walking distance of each other. Best regards
