Patrick Mcgarry (b 1846/7) married Mary Caffery (b 1845/6) in Leeds, England in 1872.  Patrick's father's name is given as John McGarry, a labourer (deceased) and Mary's is Patrick Caffery, a labourer (deceased).
Of their 8 children, 3 survived to adulthood; Bartholomew (b 1873), Ann (b 1877), who is our ancestor, and Winifred (b 1878).
English censuses generally show 'Ireland' as place of birth, but 1911 census refers to 'Mayo'.
Another family in Leeds at the time has a father (b 1838/42) and son (b 1876), both named Bartholomew McGarry.  Other sons in the family are John (b 1863), Hugh (b 1865), and Daniel (b 1876 approx).  The parents (Bartholomew and Catherine (b 1842/6) give their place of birth variously as Ballina and Crossmolina.
it seems more than a coincidence that the same name occurs in Leeds, in 2 families of Irish stock. I hope, therefore, that they are related and that Patrick McGarry and Mary Caffery are from Co Mayo.
Any information on these families would be gratefully received.

  • Hi Nigel,

I searched a site called rootsireland.ie and it has a listing of Patrick McGarry born 1846 + / - 5 years in Mayo with father John.

Similarly, there is a record for Mary Caffery born 1846 + / - 1 year in Mayo. However, when the father's name Patrick is added there is no record! It is a baptism record of 1845 for Mary Caffrey.

Given that transcriptions in those days were inaccurate and that surname spellings changed over time, it still could be your Mary.

rootsireland is a pay-per-view site so I didn't get full details. Each record costs about $5.

    Best regards
