Hi I am looking for family history/links to my paternal  family. My Father was raised in Meath with his parents and siblings his mother Annette Marie died in the late 1950's early 1960's. possibly from T.B. My father died in the late 1990's aged approx 67 and was survived  by I believe his elderly Father, brother John (we believe he is possibly still in the area moving back home on the passing of his father my grandfather) a sister who I believe is in Australia and another brother or brothers. I know my father was married before he met my mother but that marriage failed. I dont know the name of his first wife or if there were any children born within the mariage. I am looking for information as to the exact date and place of my fathers birth, baptsm (catholic) and marriage also his ancestry and his family ties. I am Irish by birth right and once I have this information I can claim that right along with a passport and a sense I hope of finally belonging. I would appreciate any help at all as I have no clue where to start as we know so little of our Irish family but hopefully that will change,

Many thanks in advance

  • Many thanks for your reply Pat, I think I may have more to go on once I have spoken in depth to my elderly mother. You ae right in your assumption that the family name is Flanagan, I know my Father was born on 21st September but the year is a little hit and miss, we think it possibly could be 1928. I know the family were farmers, and I think the township is Rathmore/Rosmore? we have the memorial card of my grandmothers death but it does not seem to have and information which could help me in my search. I remember my Father, Richard, saying he jumped ship (merchant navy) in America in the early 1950's but I dont know how true this is as he was a story teller but also a  very private man sharing little except he had brothers John and James and a sister name unknown there were other siblings but again we know nothing more than what we have managed to scrape together.I have posted here as the time frame is fairly recent so it is possible there are  family members living or friends who have information which would enable me to be able to fill in the blanks. I believe my Father came to England in the mid 1950's he met my mother and I was born in 1958 followed in quick succession by 5 other children. He was a hard working man, a fair and honest man and  as I grow older I feel I need to know the family who gave him his grounding which in turn he passed on to his children. I thank you for the information added to your reply and although I am not in Dublin, but in England I will try to find as much as I can via the informtion available.

    Many thanks Again

    warm regards

    Susan

Here is the link for Familysearch.org.

    https://familysearch.org/search

This is a Civil register and it will geatly help your search to know the Civil Areas for the County you are researching.

Here are the Districts for Co. Meath

    Ardee

    Celbridge

    Drogheda

    Dunshaughlin

    Edenderry

    Kells

    Navan

    Oldcastle

    Trim

I think Rathmore is in Kells Civil District.

When using Familysearch.org enter these in turn in the Birth/Marriage or Death Place Box. whichever you are checking.

You should search for James and Joohn as well as Richard.

I would broaden the years from 1900 to 1960.

If you feel you have the correct Cert details it can be ordered from the General Register Office, Roscommon.
