Looking for Family of Edward McCarthy, Henry Benner, both married Stephens daughters of Robert Stephens, Elizabeth and Anne.  Stephens men include Henry, William, Samuel, Robert.   The above marriages were 1790's.  The McCarthy boys,

Florence and Daniel emigrated to Virginia abt 1820. I have qutie a bit about them. The Benners emigrated abt 1820 to Canada.  The McCatthy's and Stephens lived in Tonevane and show up in 1820's tax assessment.

  • I have clear detail for my McCarthy cousins in Blennerville/Tonevane. I have exact birthdates for eight children of Edward McCarthy and Elizabeth Stephens (whose brother Henry Stephens ,my ggg grandfather is well known around Blennerville)) Married 22 JUne 1794 age 29 for Edward and 24 for Elizabeth in Annagh, Kerry. I have exact birth dates for the eight children. Daniel (16 Sept 1795), Florence4July 1798,  John 24 March 1801, jane 12 Feb 1804, Robert 30 June 1806, Robert (again?) 28 March 1810, Edmund 16 Aug 1812, and Edward  20 May 1815. The later births show up min the church records with "Edmund" as the father. I don't know why this is --however I have a letter from Edward in Ireland to his son Daniel in Virginia in 1822 signed Edward . I have a second letter from Florence to his same brother Oct 1822 (shortly before Florence decides to join his brother in Virginia. Florence mentions that he is staying at the current home but that the family is moving to Milltown.  Florence has five sons who will fight together in the Civil War. Quite a bit more on these folks.

The Benner's   (Henry Benner married Anne Stephens 20 Feb 1798.) are well recorded . Henry Benner was a descendent of the 1500 German immigrants who came to farm Kerry and Limerick in the 1700's. In a recent book , People make Places,  their history is well documented. Miriam O'Brion also did a paper on them.  My GGGG-grandfather Robert Stephens seems to have been connected or involved in all this but I do not know how.

Henry Benner took most of his children to Ontario Canada in the 1820's.

The Benner hotels , Tralee and Dingle , of course were started by cousins of Henry Benner.

Robert's sons Henry, Samuel, William ,and Robert  where around Blennerville, Garryruth, Ballymullen, Ballyard. etc.

I have seen deed docs with Hurley property (maybe Elizabeth Hurley's name?)

I know of a Benner in Canada, and also a Benner relation in Cork.   A number of McCarthy descendents still live in Virginia.

I hope this detail helps someone.

  • Dear Millsboro, what an amazing amount of research! Are you aiming to make contact with Mc Carthy cousins?

  • Hello Millsboro77!

I am fairly sure that my ancestor Robert McCarthy (1810-1870) who was from Tonevane and was Harbour Master of Tralee until his death was the son of Edward McCarthy and Elizabeth Stephens.  They did name their first son (born in 1845) Edward.  Robert converted to Protestantism as an adult, and was called a "souper".  Edward and also their son Joseph (b. 1848) were baptised at Annagh in the Church of Ireland.  Joseph was Harbor Master after his father, and younger son Robert was Harbor Master after Joseph.  Did you ever hear anything about Robert being Lock Keeper of the Tralee Canal or Harbor Master?  My Dad has DNA matches with 5th cousins descended from the Benners who went to Canada, so I am pretty sure about this.

  • Forgot to say Robert McCarthy's wife was Elizabeth Neill.  I am fairly sure she was from the townland of Killeenafinnane.
