Looking for more information on my grandfather - Richard McFadden - dob Jan 6 1984.  There was a fire that destroyed most of the records for Inishkea and I am desperate to find out more info on him and the rest of my family.  His was the last family to leave the island & we still have property on the island

Thanks for any help!!!

  • Hi Bridget

    You probably mean 1864

Here are the McFadens in Burirshoole in the Tithe Applotments in 1823-37

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

These are the McFaddens in Burrishoole, in Griffiths 1850's

Don't see a Richard in the 1901 census, but I presume they moved into the Newport or Erris area, and there are a lot of McFadden Families  (you can use this link for the 1911 Census as well)

There are some McFaddens listed here as being buried in Aughavale Cemetery outside Westport

  • Hi!

Thanks for the response!  I went back to my Ancestry.com info and here is my grandfather's info from records from Inishkea

Richard Padden - DOB Jan 6, 1894 / Death - April 19, 1959 in Dublin. My grandfather served with the Irish Volunteers (IRA) in 1913 (?).  He was the last generation that lived on the island.

My great Grandfather & Grandmother lived on Inishkea South - they are written about in a book (can't remember the name)

Michael Padden - born in 1813

    Bridget Keane

    Children:

    Michael - born 1889

    Mary - 1892

    My grandfather Richard

    Harry - 1898

    Anthony -1902

    Mary Anne - 1904

    Esther - 1907

    Margaret - 1909

    Bridget - 1911

My mother passed away 2 yrs ago and she had given me a lot of info - but I am still trying to fill in the blanks.

    Thanks

    Bridget

  • I suggest that you contact the Heritage Centre, Ionad Deirbhile in Aughleam, Blacksod, Co. Mayo. You can either email them or use their blog. Try the linkhttp://ionaddeirbhile.ie/visitor-information/the-islands

As you probably know there was a huge fishing disaster in 1927 and the islands were deserted thereafter as the islanders moved to the mainland and settled at F?l M?r and Glosh.

The family appear in the 1911 Census but could have emigrated prior to 1927. The Centre will be able to tell you if the family were still on the island in 1927 and maybe where their descendents are today

  • I know this post is about 10 months old now, but I think we might be related Bridget.  My grandmother was Richard's sister Margaret.  I suspect you might have more information on the family thatn I do, but would love to get in contact so that we can compare notes.

  • Hi All

I was glad to read you post on whom you know a Richard McFadden but the old Inniskea knew as Richard Padden or Dick Lal as he was known locally. I know all about this family and Dick was my mothers first cousin. He wrote the song 'Baidhe Innis Ce' about his life and  his involement with the Irish Volunteers. I have included all the information in my outcoming book "Amongst our Own"   (facebook)

  • Hi, I know this is an old thread but I was doing some searching about my maternal grandmother. Mary Sweeney (nee Padden) was from Inishkea South, born 1922. She emigrated to Brisbane, Australia in 1950. She may have been a niece of your grandfather.
