Hello, thank you for all the resources you list here, I'm excited about trying them! I'm looking for my McCready/ McCreary/McCreedie ancestors. John and Elinor (Nelly) would have been born about 1740, they had a daughter Ann who I think was born at Acton in 1760 before they emigrated to Cape Breton Nova Scotia during the American Revolution. John was a loyalist soldier for the British and got a land grant in Cape Breton, but I can't find any record of what regiment he was with or where he came from except this hint about his daughter (siblings Esther, Elizabeth and John).  We've heard the name is "Scots-Irish". Any suggestions?

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

Unfortunately the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Some registers for urban areas pre-dating 1800 may exist ? though often these can be fragmented- as there was an increased need in cities or larger towns to document the population. Please also note that the Church of Ireland was the official church of the country and therefore the bulk of information that does survive for earlier periods is often from these registers.

However, you can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ to get an idea of the distribution of the name.

You may also wish to try any of the following for further assistance:
