Any information about my Knockmoyleen, Ballycroy, Mayo ancestors will be greatly appreciated.
My great, great, great grandfather, Anthony O'Dougherty, has been traced back to Knockmoyleen, Ballycroy. He was of the Senior family of the exiled O'Doughertys of Inishownen. Anthony and is wife had 13 children, three of which died as infants and 3 others died during childhood during the late 1840's. At the time Anthony's wife passed away, date unknown, records indicate there were 10 living children. Names of children by birth order: John (1810-1893), Rose - died in Ireland, Margaret - died in Ireland, Peter (1822 - 1912), Nancy-Ann (1831 - 1900), Anthony - 2nd (1833 - 1919), Patrick (abt 1835 - died on voyage to the USA). We are not sure when, but the "O" was dropped from O'Dougherty to Dougherty by the time the family had emigrated to America.
My great, great grandfather was John (1810 - 1893) who married Nora Lenaghan (1808 - 1891) in Ireland. John is buried in the USA so I assume he and Nora emigrated to the USA together, though I don't know where she is buried. They had 4 children: Mary Dougherty (1832 - 1930) married John Cleary (son of Dennis (or Daniel) Cleary) of County Mayo. Sabina Dougherty (1839 - 1897) married John Cleary (son of Andrew Cleary and Bridget O'Hara of Mayo). Peter Dougherty (1843 - 1918) married Mary O'Connor (1842 - 1907). My great grandmother, Catherine Dougherty (1850 - 1909) married Anthony McCaffrey (1837 - 1904) of County Mayo. Catherine and Anthony McCaffrey had 13 children. I believe the first couple of children were born in Ireland.
Children of Catherine and Anthony McCaffrey:
1.) Francis Caffrey (1869 - 1938) He dropped the "Mc" at some point in time. Married Bridget Cleary ( - 1947)
2.) John McCaffrey (1871 - 1937) married Margaret Dorgan ( - 1939)
3.) Grace (1873 - 1955) married Michael Lynch ( - 1937)
4.) Anorah (Annie) (1874 - 1920) married Hugh McCafferty ( - 1929) son of John & Bridget McCafferty of Middletown NY.
5.) Mary (1875 - 1944) married Patrick Kaine ( - 1946)
6.) Anthony V. McCaffrey (1877 - ) married Mary Clifford
7.) Cecelia (1879 - ) married Thomas Brennan ( - 1932)
8.) Hugh McCaffrey (1st) (1880 - May 21,1882)
9.) James McCaffrey (1882 - 1928) married Julia Coughlin ( - 1941).
10.) Hugh McCaffrey (2nd) (1884 - ) married Theresa Stanton
11.) Catherine (1886 - 1946) married James Wilson ( - 1935); married John Lambertson (unkn dates)
12.) Peter McCaffrey (1887 - died as an infant)
13.) Lillian Rose (1890 - 1983) married Arch C. Moore ( - 1942)
Lillian Rose is my maternal grandmother. She and Arch Moore had 9 children, 43 grandchildren (I have 42 first cousins!) and unkn number of great grandchildren. My mother, Mary Esther Moore, was the eldest of the nine.
Thank you, Christine Martin

Hi Christine. I came across this old post of yours as having recently joined 'Reaching Out'.
My maternal Granmother, Bridget Cleary was born in Knockmoyleen, Ballycroy, Co. Mayo. In tracing the Family Tree on her side, I have come across a Nancy Ann Dougherty who was married to a Michael Cleary, the son of Constantine Cleary and Brigid Henry. Constantine Cleary was my 3rd Great Grandfather on my Mother's side of the family.
Another son of Constantine's was Constantine Cleary, my 2nd Great Grandfather who had a daughter Bridget Cleary, my Great Grandmother.
I understand that Michael and Nancy had two sons, Francis and Patrick, and two daughters, Mary and Helena Brigid. Michael and Nancy Ann came to America about 1858. Michael is buried in Andover, N.Y. I know that Francis [Carrollton N.Y.], Mary Wellsville N.Y] and Helena Brigid Salamanca N.Y] all married and settled in America. It appears that Patrick died in 1884.
I have details of their Family Tree extracted from another Public Family Tree. More than happy to share the details with you if you wish.
Kind Regards
Michael J Feely

Christine,
I have traced my family tree back to Sabina Dougherty who married John Cleary. She is my great, great grandmother.
Your information has added her parents - John O'Dougherty and Nora Lenaghan and his parents - Andrew Cleary and Bridget O'Hara.
It appears your great, great grandfather Anthony O'Dougherty is also my great, great, great grandfather. Your great grandmother Catherine Dougherty McCaffrey and my great, great grandmother Sabina Dougherty Cleary were sisters.
I would be interested in any additional information you have found about shared relatives.
Thank you

Hi Lynnette,
I may not be of too much help regarding the Cleary side of the family. Though I've been connected to other family members through DNA testing, I hesitate adding them to my "tree" as the family is SO extensive. However I recently received information about the Cleary's which I hope will prove to be helpful in your search.
Here is a link to the email which I received. I hope you'll be able to access it.

Hi Christine and Editors:
My Great Great grandfather is Anthony McCaffrey who was married to Catherine Dougherty. They had Francis, who dropped the Mc off the name. He passed in 1938. Francis had my grandfather, Hugh Caffrey. Hugh had my father, Robert Joseph Caffrey. They lived in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. I am doing research on Ancestry.com and came across someone in England who is related and we are trying to find the connection. Her screen name on Ancestry is familyroots61. She has a lot of info, including the attachement below. Please see the attachment below, it shows the family of Anthony O'Dougherty. If you look for Hugh Caffrey, b 1900 Cleveland, OH on Ancestry, you'll find a lot of the Caffrey, McCaffrey, Lenehan people, as well as some pics. My father, Robert Caffrey passed about 2 years ago, and I am continuing the family research. I would love to travel to Ireland to meet relatives and see the beautiful land I have always dreamed of. I did attend the McCaffrey Clan Reunion many years ago, in the 1980's and met relatives - Lily Moore and others. My father's cousins was an archbishop - Anthony Quinn. He also passed several years ago. Any help or info would be appreciated. Please contact me anytime - tcaffrey@juno.com
Take Care, Cousin!
