NEW ZEALAND: Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they might have travelled with?..etc.? Generally, more information was given at the port ofarrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a goodplace to find more information -and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. There are lots ofbooks and documents available about the Irish emigration to NZ. There is a website you could lookat: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/irish/2 for information about the Irish in New Zealand. The next thing you could do is find the counties and places in Ireland your family names are mostprevalent. Look at the website http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and perhapssomething will match some other clue you may have found elsewhere? If nothing turnsup ? it is advisable to try different variations of the spellings of the names. If you have a possiblefirst name you could try the Irish Census 1901, 1911 at www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ or the landvaluation record called Griffiths Valuationhttp://askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

  • Hi Kelberty,

I think I may be able to help you. We are descended from Hugh and Catherine Coll :-), they were from Gweedore in Co Donegal and were from a tiny area called Luniagh. I'm not sure about James, however James has been a name in the family for some time so it may be possible.. We are also related to a Sweeney family and Peoples family we think from the Bloody Foreland area. Apparently they came out from Donegal with quite a number of others from Gweedore and they settled on the West Coast of NZ. We believe they came due to the tax hikes during the famine times. We are very interested in making contact with you. Please feel free to make contact with me at loyal2enzed@hotmail.com. Anyone else who is related to any of tge names mentioned would be welcome to make contact also! We would love to have more information on their lives back home. Hugs x

  • We aren't sure about James, but it is a name that has been (and still is), in the family passed down from that line. Anyone else who may be related to the names mentioned we would love to hear from you also. Please feel free to make contact. We didn't know the name of the ship they came on so it was very exciting for us to see a drawing of it online when I googled it.
