  • Hi Kelly,

Thank you very much for your message.

Ballina is actually a town in the civil parish of Kilmoremoy in Co. Mayo.

A useful websites when it comes to place names in Ireland is http://www.irish-place-names.com/

It may be an idea to post this message there also in the hopes that someone from the area will see it and be able to assist or advise you. You need to join the parish page first and then post your message.

You could try searching for information on the family in civil records. Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

You could also try searching in church records. Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Kilmoremoy parish, follow this link:

Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42

Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.

Have you tried searching for the family in the 1901/.1911 census records? These can give lots of useful information. You can search these here:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Some other websites that you may find useful are:

The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

    The US National Archives: http://www.archives.gov/

    Genealogy links: http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/ireland/mayo/index.html

    Familysearch: www.familysearch.org

I hope that some of this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • While this designation is part of the state's official name, it has no practical implications. Massachusetts has the same position and powers within the United States as other states. Thanks. http://www.writingaspeech.org/  writing a wedding speech

I am the grandson of Bridget Agnes Igoe and Edward Smyth of Breaghny, Ardnaree South, Ballina Countu Mayo.  They came to stay in the US in 1922.

Your grandfather (I am certian that he was from this family) was the seventh of the nine children of James and Attracta Igoe.  Her name is transcribed in variuos records as Atty ,May, Mary, and Attracta.

The childern as I have found are Mary, Bridget, John, Harriet, Michael, Patrick James, Martin and Kate.  I have been digging and I ma in touch with my Smyth relatives to this day but the Igoe's have fallen away.

Here is a link to the 1901 census

Hope this helps and if it matches with your data, all I can say is Hi cousin

  • Hi Kelly

I believe my ggrandfather Patrick is a brother of James. I only heard of 8 children but looking at the previous reply 9 are named.   if its the same family i think 2 brothers died in a mining accident in Pennsylvania. Currently doing family resesearch and can only find one brother.. One of james' grandchildren is my aunt by marriage and currently living in the Uk
