I searching James Maher born 1786 in Tipperary. His grave stone says that he is from Killoe/Killough. I have also read that he may have been form Pukane. He was married to Catherine Hanley. A researcher felt that he had 9 children, including James b 1827, Edward b 1821, Catherine b 1826, Thomas b 1825, Ellen b 1836, Denis b 1825, William b 1815, Margaret b 1830. I have confirmed via Ontario census Denis, James, Edward, Ellen, Thomas, and Catherine. His father may have been Michael. He may have had brohters John and William. The family emmigrated to Ontario in the late 1840's. I am looking for confirmation and other Maher's from this line. I can be contacted directly at dmaher@hutchhealth.com

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
I hope that someone with information that may help you gets in contact with you.
In the meantime, have you tried looking in Griffith?s Valuation to see if there were any Maher?s still in the area 1848-1864? This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland, although it doesn?t give any genealogical information it can be used to tie a person to a specific place.

Also, civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so any births, deaths or marriages in the family after this date would be recorded in these records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records up until 1958 online at:

Have you tried looking in the 1901/1911 census records for Maher?s in the area? You can do this online at:
