My husband's gr-gr-grandfather Michael Quirk was born in Tipperary about 1809-12 and immigrated to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Canada with his brothers Patrick and Cornelius about 1829. Michael's wife, Ellen Byron (daughter of Michael Byron) was born in Ireland about 1815 but I do not know in what County.

It is possible that their ships departed from the Isle of Man.

Michael and Ellen had the following children:

John (my husbands gr-grandfather), Mary, Margaret, Bridget, Johanna, Honora "Nora", Catherine "Kitty", Sophie and William.

We will be visiting Tipperary on May 28th, 2013 and hope that someone can tell us what parish these Quirks or Byrons are from. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Beverly,

If you go to www.rootsireland.ie and put in michael quirk 1909 it will give you all the quirks in the country at that time.  Gradually refine it to tipperary and you will find two records.  one record is in Tipperary north riding and the other is for tipperary south riding.

if you open these records you will find out the parents names.   then search for patrick and cornelius using these names to discover which michael quirk is yours.

    Regards,

  • Beverly      The Quirk and Byron names are popular in Bansha/Cahir parishes in County Tipperary South. A Michael born in Ireland 1809 died in Massachusits in 1878 (parents Thomas Quirk & Bridget Carroll) and another Michael died in Milford c. 1880.. I am a Tipperary  native/ email:foxseamus@gmail.com. Have a nice trip. Seamus

  • Thank you both Seamus and Anne! I have joined rootsireland as you suggested Anne. Thank you for the instructions. Seamus, I will looked into Bansha and Cahir parishes. If I find anything in that area maybe you can give me suggestions of places we might visit. Thanks again to you both!

  • Hi Beverly

I think we have corresponded via e-mail in the past as your husband's gr gr grandfather and my gr gr grandfather are the same Michael Quirk.  I see that you believe that Michael and 2 brothers, Patrick and Cornelius immigrated to Prince Edward Island around 1829 is this new information you recently found and if it is I would love to hear more about it.  I am not sure if you have the same information that I have and that is Michael and his two brothers, William and John came to Canada via Newfoundland (one of the main reasons I believe this is Newfoundland was the most inexpensive route to Canada).  I am not sure which brother stayed in Newfoundland, but Michael and one of his brothers left and from what I understand Michael settled in Guysborough Nova Scotia while the other brother apparently went to Cape Breton.  This is the first I have heard the names of Patrick and Cornelius, if you have any further information on these two I would love to have it.

I do have a list of approximately 900 people who are directly related to Michael if you are interested.....Joe Quirk

  • Hi Seamus,

I am trying to find my Quirk relatives. My William Quirk was born in 1810 and I beleive may have come from Tipperary. We have no record of his death in the United States. Did Ireland keep a record of deaths of their natives in other countries? I have seen a  matching death record for William's wife (Ellen Howard) as Ellen Quirk.  This record is for Ireland Death Records is the same date as her death in Alderbrook, Franklin County, NY in Saint Rose of Lima Cemetary. I know that she died and has a headstone in NY. There is not a headstone for William and I do not know when or where he died just that it was after 1850 prior to 1860. I have seen a death record in Ireland but I am not sure if it matches my William or belongs to someone else. Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Hi fellow Quirk descendants,

I am a descendant of Mary Ellen Quirk b. about 1797 in Co. Tipperary. Mary's brothers were Cornelius, Patrick, and Michael, all mentioned in previous comments above. Mary Ellen Quirk immigrated to PEI, Canada (year unknown), married Martin Keogh b. about 1795 in Wexford Co. Mary and Martin married about 1820. Source: http://www.islandregister.com/quirk1.html  In looking through the church records I found a baptism record In Clonmel Perish for Mary but I am not entirely sure it is her. https://registers.nli.ie/pages/vtls000632160_059  Can anyone help me confirm wether this is the right Mary I have found? And can anyone help me find her family in Tipperary, if possible?

    Kind Regards,

    Georgette
