Is there a resource for understanding how the land is broken down? Also, for understanding place names.
Example: My great grandmother, Mary Feely's, birth certificate says she is born in Corthoon. With help I was pointed to the Census for the Feeley family is in Cartron, Kilbeagh, County Mayo.
Is Corthoon and Cartron the same and how would I have found that change?
Also, I don't understand the difference between a Town and Township and how to find the parish. I am trying to locate the Ryans from Roosky, Lowpark, County Mayo, but find Roosky in both Swinford and in Cloonmore.
My Gallagher family is from Fauleens, but when I look for a list of Towns and Villages in County Mayo, it is not listed.
I am confused.

This is a good site to outine the Parish and its town's in Mayo
http://www.mayolibrary.ie/maps/data/Parishes/index.htm
Also this site which seperates the Poor Law Union's (Workhouses), the Barony's and the Civil Parishes
The Poor Law unions were set up to distribute the Taxes collected to the Poor, they were set up in Towns and then incorporated the townlands surrounding this larger town explaining why some of the towns were in the Swinford PLU area, you can read about it here.
http://www.irelandgenweb.com/irlmay/PoorLaw.htm
When the PLU were abolished in 1864 these became the Civil Registration Districts........
Also a good site for Mayo, you can see the Baronys here.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlmayo2/county_mayo_barony_map.html
Also there are good Mayo research aids here, scroll down to the end of the page for descriptions of each Town.

I know there is a village called Rooskey, just outside Foxford, near Attymass
Also one near Charlestown.
Both Fauleens and Cartron are in the Swinford Poor Law Union Area

I am trying to find Murphy's in Corthoon, and am also very confused as to where to look. Did Corthoon get swallowed up by Charlestown? Did it consist of just one street? My great grandmother, Anna Murphy, was born in Corthoon in 1873, according to her consular papers which were sent to the US in the 1930's. I'm not sure where to look. Will it be found in Aghamore or Kilbeagh or am I looking in the wrong place all together? She was partially educated, which makes me wonder about The Corthoon National School. I understand that there is a book about the school. Any idea of where I could find it? Any help would be appreciated!

Seamus --
Do you mean that the parents of Martin Feely (abt. 1879) are Martin Feely and Cecily Mc Donnagh? And the parents of Martin's wife Mary Corley (abt. 1871) are Patrick Corley--- Bridget Mc Nulty? And the children of Patrick Corley and Bridget McNulty are this group?

Have I got it right? I have been looking, but not in the right place. Where did you find this information? If so, that's remarkable! and very glad to have that information because it completes all our great great grandparents.
Thank you for this. It is great to start meeting our ancestors. Also, thanks for all the links. They will help when I head to Cork for another set of grandparents.

This message mentions a few place names that have popped up in my search for my ancestors. I know that my G Grandfather is Thomas Swift, married to a Mary (M'Namara) . 1911 census shows them living in house 8 Cartron,Coolnaha......Thomas was born c 1839 and Mary c1841.
I seem to be at a standstill now and would love any more info to help me get further... Where would the graveyard be for this area? Is there a written history? School in area, as I think someone mentioned one....
Thank you in advance.
