I'm writing from NYC. The 9yo Katie in this census is my grandmother. Her father was a tenant farmer for Lady Gregory.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Gort/Gort__Georges_Street/1383901/
I'm trying to find her exact birthdate to aid in applying for citizenship in Ireland. Her birth year was 1890 and I believe her real first name was Catherine. But the town names on the Civil Registry Index have me confused.
I've found a Catherine O'Halloran born in 1890 on a 1911 passenger list to NY and have a 1930 NYC census record of her family. I know this is her as my mother and uncles are on it.
She told me many wonderful stories about Lady Gregory, James Joyce and WB Yeats who sketched her tenant farmer home and hearth. She never knew they were famous writers.
Any help appreciated.

The civil parish is Beagh. The registration district is Gort.
I looked at two sites which maintain civil birth registration records www.familysearch.org and www.findmypast.ie which is a subscription service. I did not locate any records for a Catherine/Kate Halloran/O'Halloran in 1890. On both sites, I located a birth index record for a Katherine Halloran in the July-September quarter of 1892 for the Gort registration district. This record may not be for your grandmother but it is the only one I could locate. The index record did not provide the volume and page number where the birth is recorded. if you want to check out the record, you need to write to the GRO www.groireland.ie fill out their form and provide the identifying info including the registration district and the quarter/year of registration. it will cost around 4 euros.

Hi There
Some nice memories there.
Rootsireland have the best parish records on line for Ireland. It is a subscription site.I have done some searching for you.
I have checked the Rootsireland site the Katie Halloran born 1893 in Gort had a father John Halloran not Pat.Her mother was Kate Hynes. This is the only Katie o Halloran the site has. Two othe catherine o Hallorans (1889 and 1887 )but they are not from Gort or surrounding areas.
Familysearch.org gives an Katherine Ellen Holloran born 1890 in Galway.I have checked with rootsireland for you and this person was born in Rahoon outside Galway city her mother was Julia.
Familysearch.org have a catherine o Halloran born about 1890 arriving in NYC on the ship the Baltic in 1910 but that person is from Limerick. Is that your grandmother?
Strange that you mention that William B Yeats would have sketched them.I thought maybe it was his younger brother Jack that might have done that (famous Irish Painter) but I see that William went to art college so maybe her memory was spot on.
I could not find the 1930 census.
If you have any more details that might narrow it down I will do what I can to help.
Best regards

Roger and Aine,
Thank you both for your help. Here is what I have so far regarding my grandmother.
http://randomorbit.com/ireland/halloran/facts.html
I think 1892-93 are too late to be her. The above info adds parental names which should help. Being that she was 10 at the time of the first Irish census shown, it is possible she was born a distance from Galway.
I do suspect the girl from Limerick was her.
On the Yeats issue: she did not say "WB" (haha) so if Jack knew Lady Gregory this may have been him. I believe sketches of peasant houses were used to aid in set designs for the Abbey Theatre. I have no idea why she mentioned a Mr. Joyce, I'm not aware Joyce ever went on such an excursion.
I've been told I can figure our my grandmothers birthdate at the Irish Life Center in Dublin, but it would be nice to have a head start.
much appreciation for your assistance on my behalf.
