Hi
I am looking for information on my grandmother, Mary Margaret Roach born in 1891. She migrated to Australia at about the age of 18. I believe she may have lived at Collogortboy, Cappoquin, in Waterford.
Thank you.

Hello there and greetings from Waterford
I found your grandmother Mary Roach in the 1901 census for Coolagortboy, Cappaquin, aged 10. She is listed as one of 10 children of James Roach (62) , a farmer and Johanna Roach (41). For some reason the surname was mistranscribed as Roch but the copy of the form itself shows clearly the correct spelling. Form B1 shows that they lived in a four roomed house with solid walls, slate roof and four windows to the front.

In the 1911 census Mary's mother Johanna Roche (spelling changed) states she had seven children and five were still alive. This suggests that maybe James was married twice and older children were from a previous marriage. Mary is not included in the census as she had emigrated to Australia by that time as you know. If you wish me to explore it further for you drop me a line at waterfordorigins@gmail.com.
Hope this is of help to you. Always happy to help the Wandering Waterfordians find their way home

Hi Tony
Thank you so much for your prompt response and the correct spelling of the locations. Unfortunately I cannot access the link that you have sent me.
Does Coolagortboy, Cappaquin exist today as a location? I cannot seem to find much on Google. Do you know much about that area that you could send me further information on.
I am also trying to go back and find further information also on the Roach/Roche history, so if you can find anything on that, it would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards

Hello again Roxarama
To access the 1901 census for your Roach family ancestors go to the National Archives of Ireland website and access the 1901 census. When the search box is displayed just put in Coolagortboy in the townland/street box - nothing else - and press return. Several family names will appear including the Roch / Roach family. Click on any of the Roachs to access their census return.
Make sure you press household return Form A button to check out the original census form image and House and Building Form B1 to get an idea of the quality of the house and the other houses in the townland.
The townland of Coolagortboy is about 4 miles due north of Cappaquin town and is quite rural. It is on the southern slopes of the Knockmealdown Mountains with the Glenshelan river rushing by. All in all it is a very picturesque setting (I bring our scout troop up camping that way) but I guess I wouldn't like to be trying to eek out a living on the sloping mountainy land as your ancestors did. The name Coolagortboy comes from the Irish/ Gaelic and means 'corner of the yellow field' - the yellow is usually supplied by the furze bushes.
I don't imagine that Google Earth has got that far yet!
I'd be happy to go and pay Coolagortboy a visit for you and take some photos and see are the Roches still in the neighbourhood. If you wish me to do this contact me at waterfordorigins@gmail.com to discuss further.
Good wishes

Hi Tony,
Could you tell me what you know about the longest living Daly family in Dungarvan? Maurice Daly b. 1804 emigrated to Newfoundland; a relative named Denis Daly emigrated at the same time or around the same time. At this time we do not know how they were related. Their respective descendants family lore says they are related from a common ancestor from Dungarvan, but never have this lineage been properly identified.
Any ideas?
Best,
Michael Daley
