My great great grandparents, James Milligan and Mary McKeag, were married in Killinchy Presbyterian Church in March 1825 and thereafter came to Canada. His father was James Milliken, her father was Robert McKeag.  Through familysearch.org I have found other  Millikens the same age group all baptized at Killinchy Presbyterian Church and now trying to discover if they were his (James Milligan's) family. I don't know why his last name is shown with Milligan rather than Milliken, but it has been Milligan ever since he left there.  My 3rd cousin had a DNA test and we are awaiting the results to see which haplo group we might be kin to.  Meanwhile I am saving for a trip to County Down, it's the only thing on my Bucket List, since I am 75 and have been doing genealogy for 44 years and still hitting brick walls there. Don't know if I should have signed up for Killinchy instead.  James was born in Killyleagh about 1800; Mary was born in October 1806 in Co. Down.  Oh, James was arched a Royal Arch Mason in Killyleagh in March 1825 as well just before they left, but the Masons will not reply to my correspondence at all.  I have to thank Alan Milliken in Scotland (whose parents still live in Co.Down) for giving me immeasurable help in my quest.  Would sincerely appreciate hearing from anyone that can help me with a breakthrough.  Lavinia Milligan Sala, Peoria, Arizona, USA

    Hi Lavinia,

Thank you for your message. I really hope that someone who has information on the family makes a connection with you and helps you to get past this brick wall!

In the meantime, it may be an idea to contact the Ulster Historical Foundation to see if they can offer you any assistance, however please be aware that a fee may be involved. Here are their contact details:

I hope this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,
