I am looking for the townland for my Great Grandfather Martin Mulroy. He was born in County Mayo in 1837, the son of Thomas Mulroy and Judith,(Julia) Flynn the daughter of Patrick and Mary Flynn. Judith had one brother named Peter. She died in Perth Scotland in 1871. Martin married Bridget Cassidy in Kilmadock Scotland in 1854 and his second wife Bridget Malley in 1866. Both wives were born in County Mayo. There were 6 children, Martin jr 1857, Mary 1859, Margaret 1860, and Thomas 1863 by his first wife and Anna 1868 and Julia 1871 by his second wife.
I have researched the Griffith's valuation and the Tithe Applotment books and have found Thomas Mulroy's in parrishes in Templemore, Meelick, Bohola and Kilconduff. Flynn's also show up in Templemore and Kilconduff, and Malley's only appear in Kildacommoge. In the Tithe Applotment for 1833 there is a Thomas Mulroy in Carrowgallda that also is in the Griffith's Valuation.
I am looking for information that would directly tie Martin to a Townland in County Mayo.
Thanks,
Joe Keogh

Hi Joe,
Thank you for your message.
Having the parish names from the land records is a good start. In order to tie Martin to a specific place in Mayo you will probably have to find his birth record. As civil registration did not begin in Ireland until 1864, prior to this all births, marriages and deaths were recorded by the local parish church so these are the records that you will probably have to look at.
Most Catholic records are still held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website however, that you may find useful is the Irish TImes, where they give an overview of what records are available in specific Catholic parishes. Follow this link to a map of the Catholic divisions in Ireland. Simply click on each parish name to see what is available from there.
http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/mayorc.htm
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
There are also some sites that have some church records available:
www.familysearch.org has a huge databse of genealogical records available, including some births and marriages from Ireland
www.rootsireland.ie have a vast collection of Irish Church records available, however you have to pay to use this site.
If Martin?s parents died after 1864 in Ireland there should be a record of it in civil records, so it may be an idea to look into these also. Civil records are available from the GRO in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
It may also be an idea to contact South Mayo Family Research centre for assistance, however a fee may apply. Here is their email:
I hope that this is helpful.
Kind regards,

Hi Joe,
I read your post and I have some information on an Ann Mulroy.
My gr-gr-grandfather, Michael Mulroy was from Strade, County Mayo (Templemore Parish). His son James, my gr-grandfather came to the US. on May 3, 1887. In addition to his wife and 5 children, there was an Annie Mulroy with them b. 1867. She was probably a cousin or niece. They came to Philladelphia, and I don't know whatever happened to Annie, re: census records. The ship's name was The British Princess, and it sailed out of Liverpool, UK. I don't know if this is your Annn Mulroy, but I thought I would contact you anyway.
Best of luck to you,
Pat Murphy-Zezelic

Pat,
I have my Anna Mulroy coming over on the Britannic from Liverpool on 11 June 1883 along with her sister Julia and her mother Bridget into the port of New York. From there they came to Youngstown, Ohio. They had been living in Perth Scotland. In the Scottish records they are listed as Milroys and Mulroys.
