John CLEAR [CLARE} and Rose HEAD [Hede] were married in the Parish of Tynagh on 7 Jan 1838.

Witnesses James HEAD and Kitty BOWGER

They were assisted immigrants to Port Philip Australia on the Westminster in Dec 1839 when he was listed as coming from Woodford aged 27 a labourer.Rose was listed as a dairymaid aged 23 from "Fenagh" or "Ferragh"??? difficult to read.

They had no children with them.

Is it possible that they had child/rchildren who were born in Tynagh who did not survive?

Is there any record of either of the marriage witnesses in the parish

Many thanks for ANY help re this couple. They have been very difficult to track down.

Woodford is in the civil parish of Ballynakill. This parish is the next parish south of Tynagh. I did find a Griffiths Valuation record for an Eliza Cleare in Woodford. This record would have been from 1855.

The Griffiths Valuation data shows 5 different head of households named Head in Tynagh parish. Unfortunately, none of the townlands listed has a spelling close to Fenagh or Ferragh.

  • Thank you Roger, I had missed Eliza :)

I noticed on an OS map a locality of Feagh near Tynagh township, which was the closest that I could find. Of course she could also have come from another county ....

  • Hi, Therese Parish Liaison officer here.  Yes John Clear married Rose Headd in Tynagh on 7th January 1838. Witnesses as you have stated.  They had two children baptised in Tynagh.

Nancy Clear Baptised 4th February 1838

    Sponsors: Mick and Peggy Headd.

Patrick Clear Baptised 1st February 1839

    James Headd and Bid Brien.

Dates of birth of these children not recorded.

Feagh is a townsland in the parish of Tynagh

I remember Headds in Cartron, Derrybeg and Carhoon which are all nearby townslands.  There remain now only the Headds in Carhoon,

There are two Michael Headds listed who might have been the sponsors of the first child.

Michael born 1819.  Father James Headd.  Mother Biddy Kilroe.

Michael born 1823. Father John Headd.  Mother Brigid  Lowrey.

Is Rose short for Honora?  If so would Rose's parents have been John and Honora Conway ( Cooney)?

    Hope this is some help

    Regards

    Therese

THANK YOU so much! ..You are a honey!

John and Rose emigrated to Australia arriving in Port Phillip in Dec1839 ...without children :(

I am assuming that they may have died

Various documents have Rose's date of birth as about 1816 .

Her death certificate [informant her 2nd husband] states that her parents were John Hede and Mary KELLY but this may/may not have been reliable.

2 children were born in the two years after arrival in Melbourne, Michael 1840 and Bridget 1842 .

I think both these may have died young too as they used both names again later.

My gr gr grandfather, John was their next child.1844

Then followed, Brigit  1846, Michael 1848 and Margaret 1850.

Father John died sometime 1850-52 and Rose remarried a John Connell in 1852.

    Children

    Roderick and Patrick [twins] 1853

    Catherine 1855

Mary 1861 [ baptism sponsors were James Hede and wife Ellen (nee Hanrahan) ]

Many thanks for your suggestion of Honora as an alternative to Rose :)

  • Hi Australia,

Therese here.  According to the parish priest there is no record of the baptism of Rose Headd in 1816.  That is the year records began.  There is a record of the baptism of Owen Headd  baptised in Tynagh on 17th August 1818.  Parents were James Headd and Mary Kelly.  Sponsors were William Headd and Biddy Mulkern.  There may be no connection.

  • Dear Therese

Many thanks again...and my warmest thanks to the parish priest also, bless him :)

I suspect that we are on the right track.

My information regarding Rose's parentage came from her death certificate , informant 2nd husband , so may well be a bit off the mark with father's Christian name.

Rose may well have been born in 1815 also as my year of birth is only an estimate.

I will see what I can find out about Owen.
