  • Hi,

I'm afraid I can't help much except to tell you that Benard and Eliza married March 1878 according to the parish record.

    Happy hunting.

  • Thanks for responding. I do have a photo of the church record of their marriage. I took it in 2007 when I visited St. Mary's in Enybegs. (attached)

Are you related at all to the Gillens or Cosgroves?

  • Hi John,

I don't have either name in my family.Am interested as my father was from Killoe parish and I spent lots of school holidays there.I had a quick look for your family in the 1901 census but was surprised not to find them.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

I dare say I was too tired to notice the names pop out but if you don't find them I suggest you broaden your search to other counties. I thought it unusual for a whole family to disappear from a townland at that stage but maybe you know more about them?

    Hope your search is rewarding.

  • Hi My great great grandmother was Ellen Cosgrove who had  siblings was born 20 may 1849 The siblings all went to america except one brother who i havent traced went to New Zealand  before she came to australia as a 15 yr old, She was supposed to go to the US but before she sailed her father John found a note from a boy from dublin going to US that he didnt like so they sent her to Bendigo Victoria on the goldfields where her uncle and Aunt Obrien/Hayes  lived .He uncle  was mayor there and married to an Obrien so not sure where Ellens blood was conected She married peter Stacey. I know her mothers surname was Ward  . She had quite a few siblings none of whom of course she ever saw again. She had 10 children and lived on a farm .

  • All I know of Eliza Cosgrove was that she was born in County Longford, in either 1853 or 1858, depending on which census you look at. She lived in Enybegs/Eanbegs, Killoe Parish in 1901 and 1911. Since she was already married, I don't know her sibling's or mother's names.  Her marriage certificate states that her father's name was John.

Ellen may have been a sister. Do you know where she was born or lived?

  • I think your Bernard Gillen may be related to my Great Grandad, Patrick Gillen. They lived a few doors away from each other in the 1901 census.

  • Hi Dggy.

I haven't been to this site in a while and don't remember if I responded to your post. Patrick may have been related to my Bernard. Would you happen to know their father's name? on Bernard's marriage record its Bryan, but I can't find it anywhere else. I have though, found a Bernard that seems to fit. This Bernard, born about 1806 and wife, Eleanor, had a daughter Bridget and sons Jacob and Thomas. I have not yet connected him to my Bernard or your Patrick.

  • Hi Driscoll1946,

My Patrick Gillens was the son of Patrick Gillen & Bridget Quinn. Patrick(jnr) had a brother named Bernard (I think)as well as a son named Bernard. I do have your ones in my tree but I think I may have added as a brother by mistake. I have only just got back to this tree and I'm finding new records. I will see if I can find any info for you and try and sort my tree out.

I really hope to make a family connection with you. I am attaching Killoe marriages for you to look at. It has your Patrick and Bridget Quinn on it in 1844. Their son Patrick and my Bernard, born in 1850 (married to Eliza Cosgrove) would have been about the same age. They may have been cousins. The problem is on my Bernard and Eliza's marriage register,1878, his fahter is listed as Bryan. I can't find a Bryan anywhere. I'm hoping it was a transcription error. Keep in touch as you sort out your tree.

  • My great grandfather Patrick Cosgrove was born in Killoe in 1866.  His parent were Peter Cosgrove and Catherine Mullervy who married in 1862. Peter's parents were Patrick Cosgrove and Rose McCann who married in Killoe in 1827.  Some time between 1872 and 1875 Peter and Catherine left Ireland with their children and came to Scotland where they settled in Newmains, Lanarkshire.  They had 10 children (at least)

    Patrick born 1866 Killoe

    Anne born 1867 Killoe

    James born 1869 Killoe

    Francis born 1871 Killoe

Peter born 1874 place not known

    Catherine born 1875 Newmains

    Michael born 1876 Newmains

    John born 1873 Newmains

    Elizabeth born 1880 Newmains

Sadly only Patrick, John and Elizabeth survived into adulthood

  • I think your Patrick and my Eliza are definitley related, probably cousins. Eliza's fathers name was John and Patrick's was Peter.

The witnesses at Eliza and Bernard Gillen's marriage were William McCann and Mary Mulleady (sounds close to Mullervy)

See the records below. Do you have any records that you may share?

It certainly looks like there is a connection. Patrick COSGROVE and Rose MCCANN were married on 8 February 1827. Their son Michael was born in November 1827.  His sponsors were Thomas MCann and Rose CLARKE.  My great great grandfather Peter was born in 1832.  The sponsors were John MCCANN and Mary BROGAN.  When Peter's son, James was born in 1869 the sponsors were John COSGROVE and Elizabeth MCCANN. I suspect that John would have been your Elizabeth's father and  probably Peter and Michael's brother.

I am happy to share any of the records that I have found.  I don't seem to be able to do that on my phone so I will get on my laptop when I can to download all the documents.

    Regards
