It is very likely that my Mahonys were from Toam, Dunmanway. Is there anyone who can tell me if there are still Mahonys living in Toam? Thank you, Jan

  • I thought that since three years have gone by, I would try again to see if there is anyone connected with the Mahonys of Toam. I am hoping that if there isn't anyone who still carries the name Mahony, that there might be descendants of female Mahonys who have information on the Mahonys of Toam. My great-grandfather was born there in 1826. I would love to know something about the family he was part of. His father was Michael, but I don't know what became of Michael. My ggrandfather Maurice Mahony settle for a while in Kealanine, Caheragh, where he worked as an agricultural laborer. It looks as if he worked on the farm of Daniel Mahony. Because Maurice died there in 1912, I have been told he would have been connected to that family, but I have never found a connection between the Kealanine Mahonys and the Dunmanway Mahonys. Maurice had three children with Eliza Kingston when he lived in Kealanine. Apparently there was a falling-out with Maurice and Daniel so Maurice moved on to Castledonovan, Drimoleague. He lived most of his adult live in that parish but died in Kealanine. Daniel's son Patrick was the informant. I also know that there was a close connection between the Coakleys and my ggrandfather's Mahony family, but I don't have enough information to know what that was. I keep hoping there is someone who knows just a bit of information. Thank you.

  • HI, My 3rd great grandmother was a Mahony. All her siblings seemt to have been baptized in Dunmanway Cork. John Mahony and Mary Buckley Mahony had approx 8 kids..... Bartholmew, Mary, Johanna, Nancy(Anna), John, Ellen, Julia & James. They moved to Surrey England before some settled in Elizabeth NJ. There is a Cath Buckley too....and Donovans seem to be attached to them somehow.  This is my farthest back Irish family.  Ellen Mahony married Daniel McCarthy in Surrey England and had Julia McCarthy in Elizabeth NJ. Julia McCarthy Kenely is my great gradnmother. I dont have alot of details yet but im working on it.

  • This is VERY Exciting. I have thought for quite a while now that your John Mahony and Mary Buckley were part of my family, that John was a brother to my gggrandfather Michael Mahony. These are the children I have for them.

  • I was reviewing this post and realized your name was familiar so I checked my DNA matches on Ancestry.  Sure enough! We are connected through DNA so we are very likely part of the same Mahony family. It is fun to have a hypothesis about a family connection have evidence it is true. On Ancestry I am janfortado1

  • Frank, I would love your help. My email address is janfortado@comcast.net if you would find it easier to communicate that way. I am open to using either these boards or email.

I would be interested in dates from your Michael and Mary Hurley Mahony so I could find them in my tree.

Thank you! I look forward to hearing from you.

  • Hi,

I have a connection with the Mahony’s from Shiplough, Dunmanway.

Daniel Mahony married Kate Cullinane 1 Jun 1912 Shiplough, Dunmanway.

They went on and had one child that I know of Julia Mahony

born 15 Jan 1913 who married Daniel Desmond 1938 Shiplough, Dunmanway

In the 1901 census Daniel was living with his parents Denis and Mary in

    house No 5 Toam, Cork.

In the 1911 census Daniel was living with his parents Denis & Mary in

    house No 7 Toam, Cork.

Kate Cullinane is my 1st cousin 3x  removed. Unfortunately I don’t have

any personal stories as I live in Australia.

  • Julie, thank you for your information. Tracing this family back, I think that Daniel's grandfather might have been a brother to my great-great-grandfather, Michael Mahony, of Toam. Looking at your Daniel's marriage record, I can see it is his wife who came from Shiplough. Daniel was from Toam. His mother was a 2nd wife for his dad, who was a widower when he married her. You might be more interested in the Cullinane family since they are probably part of your direct line, but if you are interested at all in the Mahonys. My email address is janfortado"at" comcast.net   Thank you again for being in touch as I did not know what became of Daniel, son of Denis.  Jan
