Hello,
I'm looking for my gggranparents Stephon MOAN and his wife Mary CALLAHAN. THey had 3 children Mary, Michael, and Anna (my great grandmother). I found Stephon in Griffith's Valyuation, 1848-1864 on Ancestry.com living in Kilmore Parish, Clonroot. I believe Mary CALLAHAN died when her dress caught about 1889. Children Mary and Anna emigrated to the United States but I do not know their date or port of departure. Michael stayed with his parents. How can I research this family further?
Thank you for this site,
Kindly

Hi Colleen,
Thank you for your message.
You could try looking into Church records from Kilmore parish for more information.
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Kilmore parish, follow this link:
For information on Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.
There are also some birth amd marriage records from Ireland available on www.familysearch.org so you may be able to find something there.
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so you could try looking at these records for information on births, marriages, deaths that occurred in the family after this date.Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
You can search the indexes to these records online at:

For more information on these records go to:

You could also try looking at the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any family still in the area at the time. These are available online at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
You could research Mary and Anna?s emigration more at the US National Archives at the following link:
http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/
You could also search the passenger lists at the following database:
Ellis Island: http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp
Castlegarden: http://www.castlegarden.org/
Also the ?Boston Pilot? newspaper did a ?missing friends? column for people who had relatives that emigrated and were ?lost. These message date from 1831-1921 and can be searched online at:
If you are subscribed to Ancestry, they have the indexes to incoming passengers to most US ports available.
Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope that this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
