Hi my name is Trish Johnson and I am looking for information about my great , great grandfather and grandmother - Patrick Hynes and Mary Brennan

Patrick Hynes was born in Ireland about 1804 and died in Carlton Vic. Australia on the 25th June 1875. He married Mary Brennan about1842 in County Galway, Ireland. She was born 1805 in Ireland and died 08 Sep 1891 in Clifton Hill, Vic Aust daughter of Peter Brennan and Mary Cusack.

Patrick immigrated (unassisted passage) to Australia arriving Jun 1863  aboard the ship Royal Dane with wife and children.

Mary Brennan Hynes was previously married ? to John Martyn and had one child Peter Martyn who was born approx 1830. Source: The will/probate of Patrick Hynes attests to the existence of Mary's son Peter Martyn who was born approx 1830. Also Peter Martyn left a bequest to his stepbrother Thomas Hynes in his will.

  • Hi

Hope you enjoyed your trip and found your family

Now the reason Im emailing is that  Ellen Martyn Born abt 1833 was the daughter of  Mary Brennan was and John Martyn of Tullira we always though that because she was the Female that she could inherit so came to Australia.  Last year I found what I think is two other siblings James Born 1828 and Peter born 1830.  Now we think there was some sort of scandal either they married outside the Catholic Church or not married at all.  Hence the boys couldn't inherit they also came to Australia have found their death certificates

Ellen was my Mums great grandmother and married John O'Donnell who was a farmer probably working at Tullira

All very interesting and Im wondering if we are connected through Mary Brennan

    Lynn Jones daughter Mary O'Donnell

  • Hi Rory

I noticed that you replied to Trish about the Hynes and Brennan I just happened to come on it by

chance. Now I don’t know if there is any connection and I have read Patrick Hynes will this morning

his wife Mary Brennan speaks of her son buying property but putting it in his Step fathers name.  You seem to find what Trish had to say interesting which is the reason Im telling you. Id just like to know why James born 1828 and Ellen Born 1833 aren’t mention as they have his name.  What a MYSTERY  Mum tells me that some of the pictures of the Ancestors look so much like her uncles.

If you know anything could you just let me know I love to find out for my Mum

    Thanks Lynn

Below is what I email Trish

I would love to hear more of your family line as Ellen Martyn ( your great great grandmother) is the daughter of my great great grandmother Mary Brennan.  If you would like to contact me by email at trish1johnson@ozemail.com.au   I can give you further information about the family tree and I would love to include Ellen's line on the family tree.

  • Hi Trish and Lynn,

I know this is an old post, but i have messaged you before Trish on ancestry. Your email is no longer valid or has been Incorrect.

I knew of Patrick and John Martyn but didnt see them listed on the ship register to Australia.

Mary Brennan is my 2nd Great grandmother and married Patrick Hynes.

I have tried to contact you but have had no luck.

Lynn, where and how did you locate Mary's other son? I knew of Peter born 1830 but not of any children? Did they marry? When did they come to Australia?

Message me here and I can then give you my email. Or message me via ancestry by tree name of Andrea Hynes Mitchell.
