Would anyone have any details on Patrick Murphy or his family from Kilquane near Kilmalkeader, county Kerry. Patrick married Hanora Cahillane in the 1890's in Ballyferriter. Patrick is shown as 35 years old and Hanora as 28 in the 1901 census. However Patrick is recorded as 58 years and Hanora as 38 years (Seems to be correct) in the 1911 census. I have found Hanora's birth certificate (born on first of October 1873) but I am finding it hard to find Patricks. I do know that there were a lot of Murphy families in the townland of Kilquane. It would also seem that there is a Kilquane near Killarney but I am concentrating on the one near Ballyferriter. Any information would be most welcome as I am trying to construct a family tree. (Hanora was married to and widowed by Thomas Manning and they had two children, before she married Patrick). Hanora and Thomas were from the townland of Gortadoo, Blackfields, Ballyferriter and were married on January 31st 1891. Their first child Johanna was born on the 23rd of December of the same year and their son John was born the next year. Patrick and Hanora had six children according to the 1911 records. Which DED did you look at?
Which Townland did you look at?
I checked Kilquane, Kilquane and found no Murphy.
I checked Kilmalkedar, Kilmalkedar and found no Murphy.
I checked Dunurlin, Ballyferriter and found no Murphy.

Hello Jim, I have been doin this genealogy research as part of a module within a degree course in All Hallows College, Drumcondra, Dublin 9 since September 2012. I started the degree in 20120. My mother in law is from Ballintlea (Baile an tsleibhe) on mount Eagle near Ventry. Her mother was Katie (Catherine Murphy) from Ballincolla, near Dunurlin, Ballyferriter. Katie's dad was Patrick Murphy (originally from Kilquane, about six miles from Ballyferriter and Dingle in the opposite direction). Seemingly Partick is from a line of Murphy families that lived in Kilquane. I did notice in my research in both the G.R.O. and the National Library that there are two villages named "Kilquane" in Kerry. One is near Killarney and the other as stated is near Dingle. The census sheets that I have here in front of me are from the online resources of the 1901/1911 census as released about two years ago. I selected Dingle as the DED and Dunurlin as the townland. The 1901 census shows Patrick Murphy (35 yrs.), Hanora (Wife 28 yrs,) and children: Johanna Manning (9), John Manning (7) and Mary Murphy(2), Hanora Murphy(7), Johanna Callahan (Mother in law, 60yrs) and Daniel Kennedy (5). However the 1911 census sheet is confusing in terms of Patrick's age: Partick is recorded as 58 yrs.? which does not tally with the 1901 sheet, also Nora (Wife 38yrs.), Mary(12), Nora(10), Katie(9), Ellie(7), Michael(6) and Margaret(2). Seemingly Johanna & John Manning went to America in the intervening period.I have attached the 1901/1911 census sheets should you wish to see them. I would not be concerned about the age discrepancy between 1901/1911. There are a number of possible reasons. What I am confused about is youe use of Dingle as DED because there is no Dunurlin townland in Dingle. Unfortunately the attachments did not come through so I cannot see what you are looking at. In 1911 the Dingle DED was redrawn and townlands outside the town were allocated to Glin DED.

Hello again Jim, my mistake. I looked through the 1901 census, I then selscted "Kerry", then "Dunurlin" and finally "Ballincolla". Hanora Cahillane was originally from "Gortadoo" (Blackfields). My main interest is in trying to trace Patrick's family history, i.e. his parents, grandparents, etc. I know that Patrick was originally from Cill Chuain (Kilquane). I did visit Kilquane cemetery last October in order to look at old headstones for Murphy family roots but most of the older headstone inscriptions are illegible. I do not know why the census sheets did not transmit but I could send them to an e-mail address if you would like to view them. Regards, Val.
