I’m looking for any information on my great grandfather John Flatley and his father Michael Flatley.

John Flatley was born Feb 1858 in Connaught according to the 1900 US Census.

John moved to Lancashire, England presumably for work and was living with his wife’s family in the 1881UK Census.

John married Catherine Dunn on 9 Aug 1879, where his age is written as 23 years [born abt 1856]. [Marriage certificate from the GRO.]  They married in Lancashire and emigrated around 1881/1882 to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, where many other Flatley’s were living.

John’s death certificate in 1920 lists his parents as Michael Flatley & Mary Fitzmaurice.

Michael Flatley married Mary Fitzmaurice 3 Feb 1853 at a Catholic church in Bekan [specific church not listed]. I received this information online from ‘Mayo Ancestors’. The online record did not show any parent names.  Witnesses were Martin Flatley and Cecelia Fitzmaurice

Michael is listed as a Farmer on his son John’s marriage certificate in 1879.

On the LDS Familysearch.org site, Michael and Mary’s other children included: Michael, Patrick and Katherine.

I would like to find John’s birthplace and date; and Michael’s birthplace, birth and death dates and parents as well as information on Mary Fitzmaurice. Any information about this family and siblings will be very, very much appreciated.

Brigid

  • Hi my 2x great grandmother was Margaret Fitzmauice. Margaret married a James Duggan and they lived in Lissaniska. Lissaniska is a townland, in the Bekan parish. There is a book detailing the Bekan Parish if you are interested.

    Peter Fitzmauric Largonboy
    Patrick Fitzmaurice Reask
    John Fitzmaurice Reask
    Mary Fitzmaurice Reask
    James Fitzmaurice Bekan
    Thomas Fitzmaurice Blackloon, North
    David Fitzmaurice Blackloon, North
    Micheal Fitzmaurice Blackloon, South

This is the Fitzmaurices and their townlands in the Bekan Parish in the Griffiths Valuation.

There was a sponsor of Patrick Fitzmaurice for one of our family.  Hope this helps.

  • This may confuse rather than help you but here goes. I could not find John in the baptism records but parts were marked not legible by the transcriber and some dates are missing. Here is what I did find. Frequently the godparents were relatives.

Michael of Michael Flately and Catherine Fitzmaurice. godparents John and Catherine Fitzmaurice.baptised March 27 1859. No date of birth listed.

    These were done in Latin.

Marie of Michael Flately and Maria Fitzmaurice sp (godparents) Joannes Flately Honora Fitzmaurice born 23 Apr 1855 baptised 29 Apr

Timothius of Michael Flately and Mary Fitzmaurice sp Joannes Fitzmaurice Catherine Fitzmaurice born 2 Nov 1860 baptised 16th

Maybe the last 2 used other names than their baptised names.

  • Brigid, Another son, Peter (?), was born to Michael Flatley and Mary Fitzmaurice and baptised in Beklan parish on 28 September 1872 (sponsors: Martin Flatley and Kate Flatley). Transcript gives Gorteen More as the townland - this is north-east of the town of Ballyhaunis. According to the 1901 Census - you can check it online - Mary (aged 70) was living in Gorteen More with her son Thomas (47), a teacher and his wife Kate (29). By 1911, Kate was a widow with 6 children. Best wishes, Mike

  • Hi

Just noted this record on the Bekan Parish Messages.

From my records and noting the details outlined to you previously, there is a good chance that your Flatley ancestry was based in the 19th century in Gurteenmore (Gorteenmore) district area or at least in the environs.

From my details, there were possible and likely siblings as outlined below with the plausible possibility that an earlier born sibling Michael died previously.

    Mary, born in 1855

    Michael, born in 1859

    Timothy, born in 1960

    Michael, born in 1965

    Patrick, born in 1967

    Catherine, born in 1972

You could check the website www.rootsireland.ie for more focussed details.

Both surnames were popular in the northeast part of the Ballyhaunis district noting that up to 1893, the Ballyhaunis district was primarily spilt between two parishes of Annagh and Bekan. Guteenmore was part of the Bekan parish up until 1893. The village was changed from the Bekan parish and thenadded to the realigned parish of Ballyhaunis(Annagh).

Presuming that Gurteenmore is the area, this village was also part of the old postal and school district of Brackloon in the Ballyhaunis Civil district. The Old school records for this school were all collated as part of a Brackloon Heritage/Gathering Project 2013 and listed in a Heritage book publication 'Brackloon'. (Available ONLINE on a few souces such www.mayobooks.ie). The publication notes a Register roll Book record in 1871 of a John Flatley, son of Michael, age 14. Likely to be your ancestor.

    God bless.
