I am looking for information on an Irish ancestor with a very unusual Christian name, Onuphrius.  He was apparently named for an ancient Egyptian saint.

His surname was Leary or O'Leary and he was born about 1810 in Cork, but I do not know where.  He had a son named Jeremiah born about 1836, also in Cork.

I notice that several Onuphrius' show up in the baptismal registers of this parish and I have not found them elsewhere.  I have not found one for my ancestor, however.

  • Hi John,

I did some searches for an Onuphrius O'Leary in Cork between 1750 and 1850 and I found one entry which might be of some interest to you.  There is a record for an Onuphrius Leary who was baptised on the 23rd May 1831 in Inchigeelagh Parish in West Cork. His father was Jeremiah Leary and his mother was Helen Sullivan. The dates you provided do not match this record but it could still be worth investigating further. Do you think this could be the Onuphrius you are looking for? Here's the record on www.familysearch.org https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F5YS-KDZ

    Kind Regards,

    Laura
