Hi Derek,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried checking with the General Register Office for their marriage cert? Civil Registration began in Ireland in 1864 so if there was a marriage it would be recorded in these records. You can access the website here:
http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
For some general information on marriage certificates in the GRO follow this link:

I hope that this is helpful.
Kind regards,

Hello Derek,
I am from Portumna and I will visit the parish priest in the next few weeks and see if I can find anything in the records
Where do you have your information from? It would be useful to know what you have already researched to avoid duplication.
In the 1911 census, there is a Michael Madden who is 33 (so the birth year of 1878 matches) and is married to a Mareyan (variant of Marian or Mary?) -- it does say they have been married for 11 years though but recollection was often out by a few years in those times:

There is another Michael Madden in Portumna close in age but the other information doesn't fit as well: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Portumna/Portumna_Demesne/473077/

ah, the information about the teaching is interesting -- I found this family in the 1901 census in Gorteenphadder, near Portumna, and Michael Madden is listed as an Assistant Teacher and the age fits:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Portumna/Gorteenphadder/1396450/
He is no longer listed in the same house in the Irish 1911 census fitting in with an emmigration:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Portumna/Gorteenphadder/472989/
I will ring the parish office in the morning and see if I can get a look at the records.
(As I'm sure you know, the surname Madden as well as the christian names Michael and Mary are extremely common in this area so need other information to find the right people).
Here's a link to the map showing the location of Gorteenphadder: https://maps.google.ie/maps?q=Gorteenphadder+Portumna+map&hl=en&ll=53.103919,-8.284378&spn=0.025662,0.077162&hnear=Gorteenphadder,+County+Galway&gl=ie&t=m&z=14

Hi,Dolores
On the original copy of the 1911 census,Michael had been married for four years and that he had three children, one of whitch died.I have searched the UKBMD for a third child but can not find one!
The older members of the family said they only knew of two children,Patrick and Mary.
Could it be that,Michael and Mary had a child in Ireland and it died before they moved to,Liverpool!!!
I hope this helps.

Afternoon,
have just had a look at the records and success!
The marriage record is as follows:
23rd June 1906 in Portumna
Michael Madden of Gorteenphadder, Residence Portumna N.S. (National School), Father = John Madden
and Maria A. Meara of Derryheiney, Residence Portumna, Father = John Meara of Derryheiney
Priest: Fr. Hillary, Mt. St. Joseph's (is a monastery in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary)
Sponsors:
John O'Keefe, Mt. St. Joseph's Roscrea
Sarah Flannery, Newtown, Nenagh.
#############################
The parish secretary is going to look at the births to see if there was a child born between 1906-1911.
There are lots of Meara's in the area and in North Tipp. which is where Newtown is located.
There are also Madden's still living in Gorteenphadder, Portumna.
If you look in the "Galleries" section, you will see photos of the National Schools where Michael was a teacher.

... and this must be the 1901 census record for John Meara, the father, as it's the only one that fits from the age in Derryhiveny (or Derryheiny) but just two daughters mentioned, Elizabeth and Bridget so maybe Mary A. wasn't there on the night of the census?

I have just come across this conversation. It may be closed as it took place in 2013 However if anyone sees this and can put me in touch with Derek or Dolores I'd welcome it, as I am the son of Patrick Madden and the grandson of Michael Madden, living in Liverpool.
