Looking for information regarding my great grandfather, Lawrence Burke.  According to his naturalization affidavit, he was from Tynagh and he immigrated to America in 1866.  I am guessing that he was born around 1835.

Thank you!

Carol

  • Hello Carol,

Burke is a very common name in the area and there are few records from this time but we will see what we can find out.

  • Hi Carol

I have tried to find your ancestor under the google search" Griffiths Valuation/ask about Ireland". Nothing.

I also tried "tithe collection in Ireland/Ireland tithe applotment books". Again nothing.

However christian names often carry down through the generations and there is a family of Burkes at Nutgrove Ave.,Tynagh Loughrea, Co. Galway,Ireland who have a Lawrence in the family.  The present head of the household is Michael Burke.

    Good luck with your search

  • Hi Carol

Therese here again.  Have been in touch with the Parish Priest in Tynagh.  According to his Baptismal Records there were four Lawrence Burkes paptised in Tylnagh between 1829 and 1840.

    Here are the detais.

Lawrence Burke baptised in 1829-Farher's name Patrick.

Lawrence Burke baptised in 1835 -Father's name John.

Lawrence Burke baptised in 1837-Father's name Pat..

Lawrence Burke baptised in 1840-Father's name John.

Carol, if we knew which mother's name was relevant to your ancestor we would be able to find the correct Lawrence Burke.

The mothers' names are also listed in the records but if you don't have that information we will try some other route.

The particular townslands,  within the parish,  from which the various Lawrence Burkes came are not listed in the records.  Hope this is some help.Tynagh is a parish in East Galway.  Should ever decide to visit, you would be most welcome.

    Regards

    Therese

  • Thanks so much for your help, Therese. I was able to locate the place of his marriage in this country and have been promised a copy of his marriage certificate. I am hoping it will show the names of his parents. I will let you know. Your point about the recurrence of names was well taken, too. The name Lawrence or Larry has been very popular in my family over several generations.
